Drewry Mason Elementary Annual Title I Meeting 12:00-1:00, 3:00-4:00, 6:00-7:00 August 9, 2012

What is Title I? It is the cornerstone of the No Child Left Behind Act. It is intended to help ensure that all children have the opportunity to obtain a high quality education to reach proficiency on challenging state academic standards and assessments (SOLs). Title I provides federal funding for schools to help students who are behind or at risk of falling behind. Funding depends on the level of poverty in the school. Two types of programs: School wide Programs and Target Assistance Schools

School Wide Title I School Drewry Mason Elementary is a School Wide Title I School. We receive federal funds based on our percentage of students who participate in the free and reduced lunch program. Last year about 60% of Drewry Mason’s students received free or reduced lunch. The extra funding helps DMS to provide reading specialists, instructional assistants, and instructional supplies including technology programs. These teachers and assistants help our students who are most at risk of academic failure. They help teachers provide differentiated lessons which provides individualized instruction.

Assessment Because we receive federal funds, our SOL testing is closely monitored by the state and federal government and we are held accountable for our students’ scores. VA was approved for a waiver from the federal No Child Left Behind Act. New benchmarks, and student subgroups will soon be established and published.

Virginia Accreditation Standards SOL Tests English and Math for grades 3, 4 and 5 Social Studies and Science in grades 3 and 5. Writing in grade 5 (part of the English scores) On the 2012 SOL tests, DME met the benchmarks, and will be fully accredited for the school year. Testing Dates (Handout in package).

Local Off Grade Testing Created to monitor the progress of students Off Grade Testing in 2 nd grade in all four subjects at the end of the year. Writing Initiative for grades 4 & 5 at various times throughout the year Testing Dates Handout (In package)

PALS Testing and Tutoring PALS is a pre-k through third grade program. It is monitored through the University of Virginia. There are three assessment dates fall, mid-year and spring. There are benchmarks at each grade level which determines program eligibility. The literacy team assists in the classroom and in the literacy lab.
