3 What is Title 1? According to the U.S. Department of Education, Title 1 is the nation’s oldest and largest federally funded program. Annually, it provides over $7 billion to school systems across the country for students at risk of failure and living at or near poverty. Chester has qualified to receive Title 1 funding based on a federal formula and percentage of students receiving Free and Reduced School Lunch

4 What is Title 1? Targeted assistance schools design, in consultation with parents, staff, and district staff, an instructional program to meet the needs of those students. These targeted assistance programs must use instructional strategies based on scientifically based research and implement parental involvement activities.

7 Goals of The Title 1 Program In addition to the Reading Instruction given in regular class time, students will receive direct instruction in small groups to address their interests and needs in order to bring children quickly up to grade-level competency

8 Research Based Approved Programs 3 rd Grade Zaner Bloser : Reaching All Readers Strategic Reading Intervention www.zaner-bloser.com/reaching-all-readers 4 th & 5 th Grade Fountas & Pinnell: Leveled Literacy Intervention www.heinemann.com/fountasandpinnell/lli_Overview.aspx Lessons provide students with opportunities to read a variety of genres while working on comprehension, vocabulary, fluency, phonics, word study, and writing about reading.

9 Schedule for Literacy Support During the school day – During ELA Block Four times a week – 2 days during their reading instruction – 2 days during their writing instruction 30/40 minute sessions

10 Graduating the Program Students will be assessed constantly throughout the program Groups may change based on success Students will graduate once they have progressed and are on pace with other students in their grade Parent input is required, desired and encouraged at all times!

11 Support from Home Continue working with Classroom teacher Ask questions about your child’s work Make use of resources – Library – School – Mrs. Foster Encourage! Read, Read, Read, Read, Read!
