Music Video Questionnaire: Results Eleanor Mayo

Introduction and methodology  The purpose of conducting a questionnaire for the construction of the final music video, is in order to gain relevant information in terms of what the target audience would like to see in a music video. Through the questionnaire I have discovered conventions that are typically seen in music videos, my not always be appealing to the target audience. However, despite this many music videos would be unsuccessful if these conventions were not applied during the final construction.  I have also developed my own ideas further in relation to the target audiences response to certain questions that were included in the questionnaire. From this I have been able to ensure that the overall product will appeal to the target audience, by using the results gained to create an appealing music video.

Target Audience  By conducting a questionnaire, I have received information about my target audience. Based on results I have discovered that my target audience, of 17 to 19 female students, as this is the audience that is more aware of the pop music industry. By looking at the employment status of my target audience, I will be able to see the price that the target audience would be willing to pay for an music album, which can be linked to the magazine advertisement. The overall employment status of my target audience is students and students with part time work. This will mean that the students would be willing to pay slightly more for the album, or music download due to their level of income. In regards for the hometown of the target audience, I will apply the magazine advertisement aspect. The reason for the this is when distributing the advertisement, I will be aware of the specific area that my target audience would be likely to see it. This would cause the target audience to purchase the album and watch the music video. Overall from the information acquired from the results of the questionnaire, the target audience for my music video will be students with part time work, between 17 to 19 years old. This will allow me to create an music video that has aspects that will appeal to the target audience. The town that the magazine advertisement will be distributed in would be Harlow, as this is where a majority of my target audience are from.

Music Video Conventions  Through the music video questionnaire, I have been able to gain information on what the target audience would prefer to see in an music video. This will help me in construction of the music video, as I will be able to incorporate features that would appeal to the target audience. The amount of time that is spent watching music videos, will play an important part in the construction of the music video, as the music video is something that will appeal to the target audience for a period of time. The results of the questionnaire reveal that music videos are watched daily by the target audience. This could be due to the increase in social media such as YouTube, as videos are made easily available to the audience.  In addition the results also show me what conventions of music videos, the target audience would prefer to see in the final music video.

Distribution of Music  Through the questionnaire, I have been able to discover how the target audience purchases music, and how much they would be willing to pay for an album. Due to an increase in the use of internet and music downloading software, it is clear to see that my target audience prefer buy their music online. This would mean that when distributing my music video, and the digipak, the main source that it would feature on would be the internet applications such as iTunes, as this is the most used and accessible software that allows the public to download music. This use of software would appeal to the target audience, as the age of the audience is the people who would most likely use this kind of software, therefore increasing the distribution.  The amount that the album would cost, also plays an important part in the overall distribution of the music video. Based on the results from the questionnaire, I have been able to see that the amount that people would be willing to pay for an album is £8 - £10. This implies that when producing and distributing the music, the price that it will be available will impact the appeal to the target audience.

Magazine Advertisement  As seen by the previous images, through the music video questionnaire the magazine advert plays an important part in the distribution of the music video. I order to achieve this with my own magazine advert, I will be taking ideas from the top three adverts the appealed the most to the target audience. The conventions that have been used in each advert will be replicated, to ensure that I am conforming the the conventions that are used in music distribution. From Advert 1, I will be taking the idea of a house as the background image, which could promote the idea of alienation as the house will be the central image. In order to achieve this I will use various affects in order to link in with the overall theme of the music video and digipak, to achieve continuity throughout the project. In addition, from Advert 3, I will apply the use of the details of the album release and the layout of this text. This will create an sense of professionalism, as many magazine adverts use this technique as it appeals to the target audience, without taking away from the overall purpose of the magazine advert. Finally, from Advert 3, I am going to use an similar font, as I believe that due to the target audience consisting of women, this font type will appeal to the target audience. This font would also conform to the genre of pop music, and the age of the audience as the font would represent an mature focus of the genre. Through this I will be applying conventions of the digipak to my own, in order to achieve continuity in order to promote the music video in an appealing way. I will take examples from existing album covers, that were featured from the questionnaire, and use the top three examples for inspiration for my own album cover. From Album Cover 1, I am going to use a similar colour scheme for the font, as I would like the text that will be featured to be eye catching, in order to appeal to the target audience. This could also have relevance to the song that will be used in the music video, as it promotes the idea of ‘fun’. In addition I will use the colour scheme from Album cover 2, as I believe that the use of the central image in black and white will contrast with the strong colour of the text. I will use an close up shot, in order to capture the theme of the album and song that will be used in the music video, which can also be linked to the continuity of the overall project. Finally, from Album cover 3, I will use use the layout as an example for my own album cover, as I believe that this layout would appeal to the target audience. By using this features of album covers, I believe that the overall digipak will appeal to the intended audience through the use of simple but creative colours and an colour scheme that the audience prefers.

Conclusion  Through the results of the music video questionnaire, I have been able to see what my target audience would prefer to see in the music video, magazine advert and digipak. These findings will enable me to create the final tasks with the correct conventions, and aspects that would appeal to the target audience correctly. This would mean that the final project would conform to existing music videos, in the relevant genre that has been chosen. I have been able to see what the target audience would prefer, in terms of layout, colour, images and storylines. By applying the results to the final product, the distribution of the product would increase as target audiences needs would be met, through the appealing music video.
