Second battle of bull run In September Lee invades the north with confederates and heads for harpers ferry.

Gettysburg A lot of people died in the battle of Gettysburg got killed wounded or missing. July

Battle of Antietam  In September 17, 1862 preliminary emancipation proclamation freeing slave issued by president Lincoln

Battle of Chancellorsville  The union loses are killed, wounded and missing out of the confederates out of  May 1-3, 1863.

Battle of cold harbor A costly mistake by Grant results in 7000 union casualties in twenty minutes during an offensive against fortified rebels at cold harbor in Virginia. May 13-June

Fort Sumter In April 12, 1861 – at 4:30 a.m. confederates under gen. Pierre Beauregard open fire with 50 cannons upon fort Sumter in Charleston, south Carolina. The civil war begins.

Lee surrenders  On April – celebration breaks out in Washington.

Chattanooga  In the west, Sherman, with men begins an advanced toward Atlanta to engage Joseph E Johnston strong army of Tennessee.  September 19-20, 1863.

March to the sea  Sherman reaches savannah in Georgia leaving in behind a 300 mile long path of destruction 60 miles wide all the way to Atlanta. Sherman then telegraphs Lincoln, offering him savannah as a Christmas present. On May 6, 1864.

How many died  Over Americans died in the war with diseases killing twice as many as those lost in battle.
