3 “Anaconda Plan”  1861  General Winfield Scott’s idea  Blockade of Confederate Parts  Control the Mississippi  Ends war in 90 days  That was the plan

4 Raising $$ For the War  1861  Both North and South used war bonds to raise money  The North taxed citizens  Realized victory would not be easy for either side

5 1 st Battle of Bull Run  Manassas, VA:  July 21, 1861  1 st major battle of the war  Many came to watch!!  North ends up retreating…falling apart.  Realized victory would not be easy for either side  Neither side won this battle

6 2 nd Battle of Bull Run  Manassas, VA:  August 28, 1862  General Lee and his right hand man Stonewall Jackson solidly beat the North  South/Confederates won

7 Antietam  Maryland: September 17, 1862  TURNING POINT OF THE WAR  General McClellan in charge of Union Troops  Found plan of Lee’s wrapped in a cigar  Bloodiest Battle of the War  24,000 die in 24 hours

8 Emancipation Proclamation  Issued: September 1892  Went into Effect: January 1893  Did not want to lose support from border states  Never intended to end slavery  Stated: All slave within states still at war with US on 1/1/1863 are freed

9 Chancellorsville  Virginia: May 3, 1863  South/Confederates wins although lose  General Stonewall Jackson Dies

10 Vicksburg  Mississippi: July 4 th, 1863  Confederates surrenders here  Union now controls Mississippi  North/Union win this battle

11 Gettysburg  Pennsylvania: July 1, 1863  3 day battle resulting in Lee’s losing 1/3 of his troops  “Four Score” Speech harmony Union Soldiers killed here (pg. 366)  Beginning of the end for the South

12 Sherman’s March to the Sea  Tennessee to the Atlantic  May 1864-December 1864  100,000 Union Soldiers marched South to East through Georgia  Destroying everything needed to end the war

13 Appomattox  April 9, 1865  Lee Surrenders to Grant in a house in Appomattox  Parlor of McClean’s house  UNION WINS

14 Lincoln’s Assassination  April 14, 1865  Ford’s Theatre-John Wilkes Booth kills President  Andrew Johnson becomes President
