Native American in Crisis Settlers Push Westward White settlers move westward to claim land, to farm, or to mine for gold The Homestead Act offers free land to settlers (filing fee)

Native American in Crisis The Government Restricts Native Americans The government sets aside land for Native Americans but later reverses its policy and limits the land occupied by tribes Some tribes that attempt to remain on their lands are slaughtered by U.S. troops The government forces the Sioux to sign the Treaty of 1868, which restricts them to reservations
