allies. War fought in the colonies between the French and the English and their allies..

The English wanted the Ohio Valley because of fertile farmland or agriculture. They wanted permanent settlements.

French wanted fur trade and did NOT want permanent settlements.

Borders of Ohio River Valley Ohio River Valley lies between the Ohio River and Canada and between the Mississippi River and the Appalachian Mountains.

The war started in 1754 when the French and Huron Indians attacked Fort Necessity.

FRENCH ADVANTAGES : 1.Single governmental control in the colonies 2. guerilla warfare (war tactics such as raids and ambushes) 3. network of forts from Quebec down the Mississippi River 4. Huron Indians

BRITISH ADVANTAGES: 1.Larger population; closer together 2. controlled Atlantic Ocean- blockade coast 3. natural resources 4. Iroquois Indians (ee-reh-quoi)

George Washington was sent to warn the French to get out of the Ohio Valley. He would build Fort Necessity. Young Washington

A young Virginian, George Washington, led a number of men to deliver a message to the French demanding that they leave the territory. The demand was rejected by the French. Washington returned to the Ohio Valley with more troops, attacked the French and built his own fort, Fort Necessity. This started the French and Indian War! George Washington in his Virginia Militia Uniform. Notice the British red.

HALFTIME!!! Like a football game, the French and Indian war was a war of two halves. 1 st Half France used its Indian Allies to win victory after victory. England only had its colonist as many Indians didn’t want to fight for the British. (as they had been mistreated by the British in the past) The British and its colonist didn’t fight well in the forests and against the hit and run tactics the Indians and French used.

Fort Necessity would become Fort Duquesne once the French captured it.

Throughout the war the British had a secret weapon. The Indians were convinced that the bagpipes, played by the Scottish regiments, were actually demons out to carry away their souls

Battle of Quebec Last battle of the war; the English won. French leader-Marquis de Montcalm- and English leader-Wolfe both mortally wounded.

TREATY OF PARIS 1763 Officially ended the war Signed in Paris, France England secured more territory in this treaty than any other nation has ever obtained.

TERMS OF THE TREATY TERMS OF THE TREATY: Britain received all of Canada, French possessions EAST of Mississippi River and Florida

IMPORTANCE OF the FRENCH AND INDIAN WAR 1.Colonists became more independent. 2. Colonial militia gained experience. 3. England decided to govern more rigidly and make colonists pay for war.

France kept 2 islands in Caribbean. TERMS OF THE TREATY TERMS OF THE TREATY:

Spain received the Louisiana Territory TERMS OF THE TREATY TERMS OF THE TREATY:

P ONTIAC ’ S R EBELLION British government passed the Proclamation of 1763 The Ottawa Indians lead by a chief named Pontiac attacked British settlements to stop the loss of Native land and culture in the lands west of the Appalachians The British stopped all settlement west of the Appalachian Mountains including in the fertile land of the Ohio River Valley to stop the Pontiac Rebellion. American Colonist were angry at this, they wanted to settle that land!

Proposed by Benjamin Franklin It was an early attempt at forming a union of the colonies under one government. Based on the Iroquois Confederacy.

wanted the colonists to join together for defensive purposes. The colonists rejected this plan.

This cartoon was used by Franklin to illustrate that the colonies were not united. Franklin thought that colonies would die if not united.

Washington learned invaluable lessons about guerilla warfare and would use this against the British when the colonies fought for freedom.

William Pitt British Prime Minister towards end of the war thought that England should pay all expenses of war put England into debt
