Review: STI’s can happen to anyone… you don’t need to be a “bad” person, promiscuous, or an outsider. PREVENTING IS EASIER THAN CURING. – Know what to look for – do self examinations. – Get tested regularly. – Practice safer-sex or abstinence. – Communicate with your partner(s)

Chlamydia and Gonorrhea

Basic Info The most common STIs seen in people under 25. They are bacterial infections (can be cured with antibiotics). They live in fluids – in the penis, vagina, anus, or throat. Can be passed through unprotected oral, anal, or vaginal sex.

Symptoms Often people are asymptomatic – they show no symptoms… so it’s important for people to get tested regularly! Some symptoms that may appear: – Genital fluids a different colour/texture – Genital fluids leaking at unusual times – Burning when peeing – Pain or bleeding during sex – Abdominal pain – Fever – Sore throat after oral sex

Treatment If you suspect you are infected, get tested! Cured with one dose of antibiotics. Make sure your partner(s) get tested too. Avoid sex for one week after treatment.

Genital Herpes

Basic Info A Common Viral STI. Causes painful sores, often on the lips or genitals. Can be symptomatic or asymptomatic. Passed through contact – oral, anal or vaginal sex.

Symptoms Within a week after infection: – Itching or tingling where the virus landed. – Tiny blisters may appear, and turn into sores that last 2/3 weeks. – May come with headache/fever. Testing for Herpes must happen during an outbreak… don’t wait to go to the clinic! There is no cure, but there are treatments to reduce number and severity of outbreaks.

HIV and Aids

Basic Info Viral STI. HIV – Human Immunodeficiency Virus. – Virus that leads to AIDS. – Attacks the immune system. – People feel normal until their immune system breaks down and they get sick. AIDS – Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome. – Immune system breaks down and person gets an “opportunistic infection”. – These infections lead to serious disease and death. THERE IS NO CURE FOR HIV/AIDS.
