2 What is Abstinence? An individual decides to refrain from any and all sexual activity Some individual are abstinent due to religious reasons Other reasons for remaining abstinent Prevention of unwanted pregnancy Prevention of Sexual Transmitted Infections (STI’s)

3 What does “Sexual Active” mean? An individual who is sexually active and therefore NOT abstinent may partake in any of the following activities: 1. Kissing 2. Touching/Massaging/Groping 3. Intercourse(basically any activity that involves another person)

4 Sexually Transmitted Infections Type 1: Bacterial Bacterial infections can be cured with antibiotics Type 2: Viral Viral infections can only be controlled with treatment or surgery Viral infections can NOT be cured.

5 STI’s Bacterial Gonorrhea Syphilis Chlamydia Pubic Lice / Scabies Viral Genital Herpes Genital Warts (Human Papillomavirus) HIV/AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome) Hepatits

6 Some symptoms of STI’s Some have NO symptoms at all Itching and burning during urination Unconscious discharge Redness or inflammation of the genitals Skin warts or cold sores on mouth, penis or vagina

7 STI prevention Abstinence Male or Female Condom

8 Pregnancy Prevention Abstinence Male or Female Condom Diaphragm Birth Control Hormones (Pill, Patch or Injection)

9 CLASS DISCUSSION Why is it important to have good decision making skills? Why should we be assertive and not be afraid to say no? What are some of the reasons that people who are not necessarily interested in “sex” may explore into sexual activities?

10 HIV – Human Immunodefiency Virus A virus that cannot be cured HIV infects about 0.6% of the world's population Infection with HIV occurs by the transfer of blood, semen, vaginal fluid, pre-ejaculate, or breast milk. HIV is harmless until it becomes AIDS

11 AIDS – Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome Derived from HIV AIDS attacks the immune system, and does not allow the body to recover from any infections or viruses. AIDS is caused from HIV and therefore received through any exchange of blood, semen, breast milk, vaginal fluid or anal mucosa. In 2007, it was estimated that 33.2 million people lived with the disease worldwide, and that AIDS killed an estimated 2.1 million people, including 330,000 children

12 PERSONAL SAFETY/INJURY PREVENTION Name some risk-taking behaviors' that you partake in. (I.e. hitchhiking) What are some signs that violence may occur in a relationship? What are some positive characteristics' of a health relationship?

13 Support Systems There are many sources of support that individuals can seek help from when they are uncertain of decisions or feel they have made a wrong decision: Parents Guardians Doctors Teachers (NOT FRIENDS)
