Essential ?: How do I use verbs other than ser in sentences in Spanish?

Verbs  So far, you have learned how to use one verb – SER  You have learned to conjugate it  Soy, eres, es, somos, son  Conjugating means that you change the verb to match who is doing the action  You must conjugate a verb if you are indicating someone is doing it.

Verbs  There are three types of verbs  -ar  -er  -ir  This chapter we focus on –ar verbs.

Verbs  A few things to know  The “infinitive” of a verb is the verb when it is not conjugated (hablar), when it still ends in ‘r’  The verb ending refers to either the –ar, -er or –ir that you will remove  The stem refers to the part of the verb that is not the ending (hablar: habl – stem, -ar – ending)

Conjugating  You need to remember the pronouns  Yo = I  Tú = you (informal -- you will learn more about this)  Él = he  Ella = she  Ud. (Usted) = you (formal)  Nosotros = we  Vosotros = you all (only in Spain, we won’t use this)  Uds. = you all (we will use this)  Ellos/ellas = they

Conjugating  When you conjugate a verb, just like with ser, there is a different form of the verb depending on who is doing the action.  To conjugate an –ar verb, meaning if someone does the action, you will follow two steps  1. Remove the –ar ending  2. Add the new conjugation ending

Conjugating –ar verbs  These are the conjugation endings you use  Yo: -o  Tú: -as  Él/Ella/Ud.: -a  Nosotros: -amos  Vosotros: -áis (for knowledge purposes only)  Ellos/Ellas/Uds.: -an

An example: Cantar – to sing  Yo canto (I sing)  Tú cantas (you sing)  Él canta (he sings)  Ella canta (she sings)  Ud. canta (you [formal] sing)  Nosotros cantamos (we sing)  Ellos/Ellas cantan (they sing)  Uds. cantan (you all sing)

Things to remember  If you are naming one person or thing, use the él/ella form.  Juan canta. El perro canta. Mi amigo canta.  If you are saying (someone else) y yo…that is using the nosotros form.  Mi amigo y yo cantamos.  If you mention multiple people, use the ellos form  Mis amigos cantan. Los alumnos cantan. Bob y Karla cantan.

Now you try…with estudiar ( to study)-write it on your desks!  Yo  Tú  Él  Ella  Ud.  Nosotros  Ellos/ellas  Uds.

This is how it should look:  Estudio  Estudias  Estudia  Estudiamos  Estudian

Practice in class: 1. I will say 6 verbs and you conjugate them in the correct form. 2. I will say 6 conjugated verbs and you cover your answer until I say to show your group for a “show down”. 3. Worksheet practice (teacherpage) under today’ s date. (both pages) 4. Connect 4 vs your face partner.

Remember…  You will “conjugate” a verb EVERY TIME you are indicating that someone is doing it.  You will take off the –ar ending  You will add a new conjugation ending  Vosotros is only used in Spain. It means “you all”.  You will use Uds. for “you all”

Your homework… On a sheet of paper or using your Ipad:  You have to conjugate each verb the way you did cantar and estudiar Necesitar Buscar Mirar Comparar Pagar Usar Llear Hablar Calzar Trabajar Desear
