Essential ?: How do I use verbs other than ser in sentences in Spanish?

Verbs  So far, you have learned how to use one verb – SER  You have learned to conjugate it  Soy, eres, es, somos, son  Conjugating means that you change the verb to match who is doing the action  You must conjugate a verb if you are indicating someone is doing it.

Verbs  There are three types of verbs  -ar  -er  -ir  This chapter we focus on –ar verbs.

Verbs  A few things to know  The “infinitive” of a verb is the verb when it is not conjugated (hablar), when it still ends in ‘r’  The verb ending refers to either the –ar, -er or –ir that you will remove  The stem refers to the part of the verb that is not the ending (hablar: habl – stem, -ar – ending)

Pausa…  Tell your pareja 3 things you learned so far. Add any new info your pareja tells you  Together, write 2 questions on the left side of your notes and mark the answers on the right

Conjugating  You need to remember the pronouns  Yo = I  Tú = you (informal -- you will learn more about this)  Él = he  Ella = she  Ud. (Usted) = you (formal)  Nosotros = we  Vosotros = you all (only in Spain, we won’t use this)  Uds. = you all (we will use this)  Ellos/ellas = they

Conjugating  When you conjugate a verb, just like with ser, there is a different form of the verb depending on who is doing the action.  To conjugate an –ar verb, meaning if someone does the action, you will follow two steps  1. Remove the –ar ending  2. Add the new conjugation ending

Pausa…  Tell your pareja 3 things you learned so far. Add any new info your pareja tells you  Together, write 2 questions on the left side of your notes and mark the answers on the right

Conjugating –ar verbs  These are the conjugation endings you use  Yo: -o  Tú: -as  Él/Ella/Ud.: -a  Nosotros, vosotros and ellos/ellas/Uds you will learn next chapter

An example: Cantar – to sing  Yo canto (I sing)  Tú cantas (you sing)  Él canta (he sings)  Ella canta (she sings)  Ud. canta (you [formal] sing)

Pausa…  Tell your pareja 3 things you learned so far. Add any new info your pareja tells you  Together, write 2 questions on the left side of your notes and mark the answers on the right

Things to remember  If you are naming one person or thing, use the él/ella form.  Juan canta. El perro canta. Mi amigo canta.

Now you try…with estudiar ( to study)  Yo  Tú  Él  Ella  Ud.

This is how it should look  Yo estudio (I study)  Tú estudias (you study)  Él estudia (he studies)  Ella estudia (she studies)  Ud. estudia (you formal study)

Remember…  You will “conjugate” a verb EVERY TIME you are indicating that someone is doing it.  You will take off the –ar ending  You will add a new conjugation ending

Pausa…  Tell your pareja 3 things you learned so far. Add any new info your pareja tells you  Together, write 2 questions on the left side of your notes and mark the answers on the right

Don’t forget your summary  What did you learn?  What was most important?  How does this relate to what you already know?  What was easiest?  What will be most difficult?

Your homework…  Look at your calendar and find all the verbs (starts with ‘necesitar’ and ends with ‘desear’.)  You have to conjugate each verb the way you did cantar and estudiar  Yo, tú, él, ella, Ud.
