PCD Objective 1.01 Maslow’s Hierarchy of Human Needs Abraham Harold Maslow “According to Maslow's theory, all needs have a certain priority. Needs of one level must at least partially fulfilled before a person can realize higher needs.” (Ryder/Decker, 391)

Mrs. Spitzer’s Flower Garden Directions: You will receive the following supplies to create and design any type of flower with petals. One green construction paper Two different colored sheets of construction paper One pair of scissors One glue You will have approximately 10 minutes to complete your flower.

Let’s Review…. What did Mrs. Spitzer plant? What was the name of the story? Mrs. Spitzer’s Garden What did Mrs. Spitzer plant? Seeds What do the seeds symbolize in the story? Children Caring for the seeds is like caring for children. “She waters them, feeds them, and makes sure they get plenty of sun.”

What do children need to help them grow? Think of every possible thing(s) children need. List ALL those needs on each flower petal. How does all of this relate to Maslow??

Love and Acceptance Needs Safety and Security Needs If you had to rank these by most important to least important which would you put 1st? May I have a volunteer to come to board to write down what the class thinks is… Most important=1 Least important=5 Esteem Needs Physical Needs Self-actualization Love and Acceptance Needs Safety and Security Needs

What are Maslow’s Human Needs? Here is the correct answer. Write your information with the coordinating colored pencil. Self-actualization Esteem Needs Love and Acceptance Needs Safety and Security Needs Physical Needs

Physical needs Food Water Air Shelter Clothing These items are essential for good health and well-being, and for continuation of life.

Physical Needs In your own paper write the following: Question’s and complete sentence’s Are you meeting these needs for your well being and good health? Who provides these needs for you? Could you provide these needs for a baby?

Safety and Security Needs Staying well, avoiding being ill Avoiding danger Safe circumstances Stability Protection Structure, for order, some limits

Love and Acceptance Needs Friends Sweetheart Children Affectionate (hug, arm around another person, hand shake) relationships in general Sense of community (where you live; people, places, things around you)

The Esteem needs Self-respect Self-esteem Confidence Respect of others These words mean the same as self-respect (write 1 or 2 to help you remember what it means): Confidence Competence (being capable) Achievement (accomplishment) Mastery Independence (to do on your own) Freedom Self-esteem These words mean the same as self-esteem (write 1 or 2 to help you remember what it means): Respect of others Status (position) Fame Glory Recognition (to acknowledge) Attention Reputation (character—who you are as a person) Appreciation Dignity Even dominance (power)

Self-actualization Reality-centered Problem-centered Knowledge and appreciation of beauty (aesthetics), goodness, freedom and a realistic view and acceptance of self and others. Be REAL about you and other people!!! Reality-centered Separate what is fake/dishonest from what is real/genuine. Not living in a fantasy world…being able to know what is REAL vs. FAKE Problem-centered Try to get rid of personal problems.   Different perception of means and ends Try to set goals for yourself in your life.

Who said we NEED ALL of these things? Maslow

Learning Log (your own paper) Write in your own words what each statement means to YOU! Every person has needs. Needs of one level must be at least partially met before one can be aware of higher needs. Successful parenting is affected by how well a child’s needs have been met. Development of a child is affected by how well the child’s needs are met.

What does this quote mean to you? “According to Maslow's theory, all needs have a certain priority. Needs of one level must at least partially fulfilled before a person can realize higher needs.” (Ryder/Decker, 391) Write in your own words what this statement means to YOU!

Color coordinate… Make sure you have color coordinated your pyramid.

Maslow Group Project Teacher will assign you to a group. Directions: Teacher will assign you to a group. Gather group members and materials needed. Designate a spot in the room for your group with a table. Draw a pyramid on your paper using black writing utensil. Use what you wrote in learning log 1; skills, objects, and/or situations and fill in the appropriate area of the pyramid. After each member of the group has wrote their information, you will then go through the list and check with a green marker the things you already have and with a red marker the things you want before becoming a parent. When all groups are finish, you will need to assign your group a spokesperson and someone to tape paper to the wall. Each groups spokesperson will share with the class.

POP Quiz Clear your desk. You will need a writing utensil and your brain!!!  Listen and wait for directions!
