2 Humanists focus upon potentials. Humanist do not believe that human being are pushed and pulled by mechanical forces, either of stimuli and reinforcements (behaviorism) or of unconscious instinctual impulses (psychoanalysis). HUMANIST PSYCHOLOGY

3 They believe that humans strive for an upper level of capabilities. Humans seek the frontiers of creativity, the highest reaches of consciousness and wisdom. HUMANISTS CONTINUED

4 MASLOW SAID: All human behavior is motivated by a desire to satisfy needs. In order for a person to keep striving towards the ultimate in his/her growth there has to be a feeling of accomplishment

12 Safety: the condition of being protected from or unlikely to cause danger, risk, or injury. Security: the state of feeling safe, stable, and free from fear or anxiety.

16 Having a sense of love and belonging allows us to give and receive affection from another person LOVE AND BELONGING

17 This is the third level of the hierarchy. Remember once all or most of a person’s physiological and safety needs have been met, one can move on to LOVE and BELONGING.

20 BASIC NEEDS Physiological/physical, safety and security, love and belonging, esteem are all BASIC needs Maslow says these needs motivate people if they are unmet The longer they go unmet, the more intense the desire to meet the need becomes Ex. Hunger becomes more intense if food need not met

22 SELF-ACTUALIZATION Closely related with self-esteem. Maslow said that only 1 in 100 people will become self-actualized Cannot be obtained unless all other areas are mastered first. Living up to your full potential This will look different for each person
