2 The Willpower Instinct Which theory of Development was closely aligned with Bandura’s study of children and aggression? Students read pg. 41 – 45 in turns Reading Strategy: Write a question about the headline “Train your Mind and Your Body”. As you read, answer your question and write it down. After reading: List 3 types of exercise that you will commit to begin doing.

3 Bellringer What motivates human behavior? With a partner, brainstorm a list of at least 5 factors.

4 What Do You Think? Decide on a scale of 1 – 10 how much you agree with the following statement: All human beings need to feel competent, to win approval and recognition, and to sense that they have achieved something.

5 Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs People are motivated to achieve certain needs. When one need is fulfilled a person seeks to fulfill the next one, and so on.  Fundamental Needs  Psychological Needs  Self-Actualization Needs

7 Biological and Physiological needs basic life needs - air, food, drink, shelter, warmth, sex, sleep, etc.

8 Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs Safety needs protection, security, order, law, limits, stability, etc

9 Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs Belongingness and Love needs family, affection, relationships, work group, etc

10 Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs Esteem needs achievement, status, responsibility, reputation

11 Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs Self-actualization personal growth and fulfillment

12 Guided Practice Directions: Decide which need on Maslow’s hierarchy is being fulfilled first, and what need is being sacrificed.

13 Guided Practice #1 Situation: A woman who is overweight is making changes in her diet. Because of this, she is short- tempered and irritable with her family. Need being fulfilled: Biological/ Physiological Need being sacrificed: Love and belonging (snapping at family)

14 Guided Practice #2 Situation: A student is feeling very very sleepy in their desk. Although she should be taking notes for an upcoming exam, she puts her head down instead. Need being fulfilled: Biological/ Physiological Need being sacrificed: Esteem (achievement)

15 Guided Practice #3 Situation: A famous professional singer gives up his singing career because his wife has threatened to leave him. Need being fulfilled: Love and belonging Need being sacrificed: Esteem

16 Guided Practice #4 Situation: An uneducated, very unhappy mother and wife stays married to her abusive husband because she was an orphan. Need being fulfilled: Love and belonging Need being sacrificed: Physiological

17 Guided Practice #5 Situation: A student who walks far to school must leave school early before taking a makeup exam, in order to get home before dark. Need being fulfilled: Safety Need being sacrificed: Esteem (achievement)

18 Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs And Advertising

19 Group Practice: Advertising Activity Look through the magazines until you locate an advertisement in which objective is to address the level of need you been assigned. On an attached piece of paper, write in 5 -7 sentences WHY this advertisement fulfills this need.

20 Exit Ticket: Create your own advertisement! 1.Create your own advertisement for a product or service that targets one of Maslow’s needs. 2.On the the back, write: 1. HOW this advertisement targets this specific need. 2.What need do you personally most commonly address when viewing an advertisement (what is your perceived weakness?)

21 Exit Ticket Five minutes after you woke up this morning, what did you do? In doing this, what level of need did you automatically address?
