1 Abraham Maslow Hierarchy of Needs

2 Abraham Maslow (1908 – 1970) Psychologist who linked social,
physiological and emotional needs in a hierarchy of basic needs. Maslow's Hierarchy of needs is usually presented as a pyramid. Proposes that basic physical needs must be satisfied before higher needs are met. Each level of need must be satisfied before moving on to the next level. Only when lower needs of physical and emotional needs are satisfied can a child progress to the next level.

Self-actualisation achieving full potential Self-esteem needs respect, including self-respect Love and emotional needs family, affection, relationships, belonging Safety and security needs freedom from anxiety and chaos, protection, security, stability, predictability Biological and Physiological needs basic life needs - oxygen, food, drink, shelter, warmth, sleep

4 The Needs of Babies and Children
Protection from infection and injury Access to health care Intellectual stimulation Praise, recognition of achievements Social contacts Security Shelter, warmth, clothing Cleanliness Fresh air and sunlight Love and consistent, continuous affection Sleep, rest and activity Food

5 Self Esteem A child who has high self esteem will be:
Happy with the type of person they are. Be aware of their competencies. Will be clear about their behaviour and how it is viewed by others. Have an ability to achieve and have confidence. Will have social competence in family and friend relationships.
