Business Improvement Districts (BIDs) in England Legislation in 2004 Can be set up in any existing business area Starts with a ballot of businesses Max 5 year term 71 successful ballots, 13 unsuccessful May charge a compulsory levy Extra services
Better Bankside Established April members, £800K pa Travel not part of original programme Responded to direct approach from LB Southwark to take part in Optimum 2 Began meeting every 6 weeks at different premises.

Master Travel Plan Targets The key targets of the Bankside Master Travel Plan are to increase by 50% by 2010: the share of people who walk to work, amongst those who live within a 2 mile radius. the share of people who cycle to work, amongst those who live within a 5 mile radius. the number of work related journeys made to locations within London on foot (2006: 20%) the number of work related journey made to locations within London by bicycle (2006: 3%)

Summary BID provides framework for business engagement & funding for measures Travel Planning Group has oversight of Master Travel Plan & the targets Master Travel Plan helps maintain momentum and direction of measures Achieving its aim to increase travel plans and walking and cycling promotion
