Business Improvement Districts (BIDs) worldwide Invented in the USA to address inner-city decay – Zero Tolerance Now 1400 in USA Took many years to develop Owners pay the levy (occupiers in the UK) BIDs now also prominent in Australia and South Africa

Business Improvement Districts (BIDs) in England Legislation in 2004 Can be set up in any existing business area Starts with a ballot of businesses Max 5 year term 71 successful ballots, 13 unsuccessful May charge a compulsory levy Extra services

Bankside Master Travel Plan Developed in consultation with group members in 2007 Targets set based on Travel Survey 2006 Focus on walking & cycling Commuting and work related journeys Framework for site specific plans

Master Travel Plan Targets The key targets of the Bankside Master Travel Plan are to increase by 50% by 2010: the share of people who walk to work, amongst those who live within a 2 mile radius. the share of people who cycle to work, amongst those who live within a 5 mile radius. the number of work related journeys made to locations within London on foot (2006: 20%) the number of work related journey made to locations within London by bicycle (2006: 3%)
