What is physical health? The part of health that deals with the body is physical health. Today’s choices will affect your physical health for years to come.

Get 8 hours of sleep every night. Avoid drugs, alcohol and tobacco. Physical health Good Habits Practice the following habits to maintain your physical health: Eat a balanced diet. Get plenty of exercise. Get 8 hours of sleep every night. Avoid drugs, alcohol and tobacco. Practice safety. Practice good hygiene. Visit your doctor and dentist regularly.

What Is Emotional Health? Emotional health is the way you recognize and deal with your feelings. During your adolescence years your body is changing and responsibilities are becoming more which can play a direct role on your emotional health.

Healthy Emotions People with emotional health are able to: Express emotions in calm and healthy ways Deal with sadness and get help for depression Accept his or her strengths and weaknesses

Mental health What Is Mental Health? Mental health is the way you cope with the demands of daily life. Your mental health can be affect by many of the same things that affect your physical health. For example a lack of sleep hurts your mental alertness and your ability to deal with stress.

Good Mental Health Having good mental health means that you can: Solve problems with little trouble Deal with stress effectively Accept new ideas

Wellness Balance Maintaining Balance Wellness is having all four parts of health in good shape and equally balanced. The next slide shows the four parts of health.

Heredity and Traits What Is Heredity? Heredity is the passing down of traits from parents to their biological child. Inherited Traits Physical traits that can be inherited, or passed down, include height and hair, eye, and skin color. Certain diseases can also be passed down from parent to child.

Heredity and inherited traits An example of a disease that could be passed down would be muscular dystrophy which is an inherited disease of the muscles. If both parents carry the genetic trait for the disease, their child has a 25% chance of being born with the muscular dystrophy. Other disease like heart disease, are only partially determined by a person’s heridity.

The environment can affect all parts of your health. Your environment includes all of the living and nonliving things around you. The environment can affect all parts of your health.

Emotional stress has also been known trigger of asthma attacks. Environment Asthma attacks are one such example of the way in which the environment can affect your health. Environmental factors that may bring on an asthma attack include such things as air pollution, tobacco smoke, and pollen. Emotional stress has also been known trigger of asthma attacks. Seasonal affective disorder, or SAD causes depression in some people if they do not get enough sunlight.

A lifestyle is a set of behaviors that you live by. Living Healthy The choices you make throughout the day such as what you eat and what you do for fun influence your lifestyle. A lifestyle is a set of behaviors that you live by. To maintain a health lifestyle, you will want to develop a good attitude about your health. An attitude is a way of acting, thinking, or feeling that causes you to make one choice or another.

Take control of your health Make Healthy Decisions To take control of your health you must first decide to improve your lifestyle. Next, you should decide which part of health you want to improve.

Healthcare and personal responsibility Make Healthy Decisions You are responsible for caring for your own health. Your responsibilities include: 1. Brushing and flossing your teeth 2. Eating healthy foods and exercising 3. Getting enough sleep 4. Wearing safety equipment when playing sports 5. Using your seat belt 6. Avoiding dangerous behavior

Healthcare and personal responsibility What responsibilities do you have? Cleaning your room? Feeding your dog? Making responsible healthcare choices can be apart of practicing preventive healthcare. Preventive healthcare is taking steps to help prevent illness and accidents. These steps include regular visits to your doctors and dentist .

Life Skills activity Having a dental exam every year is a good way to find and fill cavities before they get very large. Do the Life Skills Activity to think of other forms of preventive healthcare.
