THE IMPORTANCE OF GOOD HEALTH Health – the combination of physical, mental/emotional, and social well-being. The Health Continuum Health is dynamic (always changing) Think of your health along any point along a continuum ( your day to day span of life) Changes in your health continuum may occur suddenly (injury) or gradual (disease). Where are you at right now on the health continuum Wellness – an overall state of well-being, or total health. Wellness comes from living each day and making decisions and practicing behaviors that are based on sound knowledge and healthful attitudes. PROMOTING YOUR HEALTH The decisions you make each day will impact your health. Lifestyle Factors – personal behaviors related to the way a person lives. Lifestyle factors help determine the level of overall health. Certain lifestyle factors are directly connected to diseases and health conditions smoking/lung cancer, etc. What are others? **Lifestyle Factors That Promote Good Health Getting 8 – 10 hours of sleep each night Starting each day with a healthy breakfast’ Eating a variety of nutritious foods each day Physcial activity for 20 minutes for 3 or more times a week Maintaining a healthy weight Avoiding tobacco, alcohol and other drugs Abstaining from sexual activity before marriage Managing stress Maintaining positive relationships Practicing safe behaviors to prevent injuries Southland Academy - "Committed to Excellence"

Physical Health Physical health has to do how well our bodies function. Being physically healthy includes: 1. getting adequate sleep 2. eating nutritious meals 3. drinking enough water 4. being physically active It also includes good hygiene and regular medical and dental checkups. INFLUENCES ON YOUR HEALTH 6 Important Influences on Health Heredity – all the traits that were passed on to you from your parents Physical traits include eye color, hair color, and height. Inheriting certain genes may put you at risk for diseases such as diabetes, etc. Southland Academy - "Committed to Excellence"

Environment – the sum of all your surroundings. Physical environment – where you live, go to school, “hang out”, etc. If you live in a good, clean, safe environment = good mental/emotional health. Social environment – your family and friends and people you come in contact with each day, Peers – people of the same age and have similar interests. Culture – the collective beliefs, customs or behaviors of a group of people (ethnic, community or nation). Culture can include language, similar foods, traditions, etc. Southland Academy - "Committed to Excellence"

Attitude – the way you view situations. Attitude can have an influence on the decisions we make. Behavior – the actions you do each day. Even though we can’t control heredity (somewhat), we do control our behavior and should be responsible for it. Media – various methods of communicating information. The media has a MAJOR influence on our health  TV commercials, magazine ads, etc. Technology – advancements in the medical field (screenings, treatments, medicine) have influence on individual health Southland Academy - "Committed to Excellence"

Lesson 3 Learning Objectives Identify health risks and describe ways to reduce them Associate risk-taking with consequences Analyze the importance of abstinence from risk behaviors such as tobacco, alcohol, drugs and sexual activity before marriage. Southland Academy - "Committed to Excellence"

Part of becoming an adult is learning how to make responsible decisions. UNDERSTANDING HEALTH RISKS Risk Behaviors – actions that can potentially threaten your health or the health of others. Becoming responsible for own health: Step 1 – increase awareness of risk behaviors in your life. Step 2 – examine current behaviors and make necessary changes Southland Academy - "Committed to Excellence"

24 Lesson 3 Your Behavior and Reducing Health Risks
Cumulative risks – related risks that increase in effect with each added risk. Building up over time. Examples  1. Not using sunblock over long period of time increases chance for skin cancer, Continuous eating of high fat, high calorie foods without exercising increases chance for heart attack and stroke, 3. Not wearing a seatbelt increase chance for serious injury or death if you have an accident Southland Academy - "Committed to Excellence"

ABSTAINING FROM RISK BEHAVIORS Abstinence – avoiding harmful behaviors. Abstaining from Tobacco, Alcohol and Other Drugs Abstaining from these 3 substances = avoid consequences! Use of these 3 negatively effects all 3 areas of the health triangle – physical, mental/emotional and social. Use can isolate you from friends and family. Underage usage and possession IS AGAINST THE LAW!!!!!!!!! Southland Academy - "Committed to Excellence"

Abstaining from Sexual Activity Never have to worry about unwanted pregnancy Never have to worry about problems with being single parent Never have to take on responsibilities of caring for a child Never have to worry about contracting a STD Free from emotional problems – guilt, regret or rejection.
