2012 Mock STAAR Training

Code for Oath Document

Purpose of this Training To ensure all personnel involved in state testing are trained in security and confidentiality, as well as understand the state, district, and campus test administration procedures to be utilized before, during, and after STAAR testing.

Review your Manuals “This training does NOT take the place of reading the appropriate manuals.” -TEA, Student Assessment Division

TEST SECURITY REGULATIONS The security of testing materials is your responsibility until you turn them back in to the Campus Testing Coordinator. Keep it locked up in a safe place until it is returned.

Security All personnel coming into the testing area will need to sign and out on the seating chart. The student should sign the travel log before leaving the classroom and upon returning from the restroom Only one student is allowed to leave the classroom at a time Any breaks taken except for visits to the nurse count in the student’s time.

Purpose of the Mock STAAR The purpose of this assessment is Have the students and teachers experience the new state time limit Gather any information regarding the students’ progress of the assessed curriculum

TEST SECURITY REGULATIONS You are expected to actively monitor You must understand the security, confidentiality, and procedural expectations You must understand the penalties for violations

Student Behavior on Test Day If a student continues to disrupt a classroom after your reprimand, contact the CTC. The CTC will assess the situation and report to the principal or counselor with details. The principal or counselor will evaluate the situation and make a decision regarding the incident benefiting all concern.

Test Administrator’s Responsibilities Before Test Day –Help to Prepare your Assigned Testing Room Remove or cover bulletin boards and instructional displays that might aid students during testing Ensure the environment will not hinder any student’s performance (lighting, space to work, comfort) Make sure all computers in your testing area are turned off!!! (power them down completely)

Test Administrator’s Responsibilities Before Test Day Verify the Testing Accommodations List – Students who need small group instruction, accommodations, or are taking anything besides STAAR are ON THE LIST – Accommodations listed are what the student has been receiving and are what you know to be scheduled for that child – Make sure there are no issues with the student grouping, the tester, or the room assignment

Test Administrator’s Responsibilities Test Day It is important that you are here on test day, but sometimes emergencies arise. If you suspect you may not be able to be at school on testing day, notify Ms. Fields as soon as possible.

Test Administrator’s Responsibilities Test Day Due to the importance of starting on time, on the Morning of Testing Between 7:00 – 7:45 Pick up bins from the STAAR room. Count booklets and answer documents, and verify you have the needed materials… recount if you notice a discrepancy and then let the test coordinator know…we will resolve it. Verify you have a booklet and answer document for every student you are to test. Each test administrator will have both Test Booklets and Answer Documents in their bin for each student they will be testing. Sign control sheet indicating you agree with the numbers of booklets and answer documents assigned to you Keep your bin secure!

Test Administrator’s Responsibilities Test Day From 7:0 – 8:15… Take attendance of your Testing class using your test roster. Place this in your tub. This will be turned in with your tub at the end of the day. Mrs. Garcia will use the attendance information from the non-testing teachers to take attendance for you. Using the information on your planning sheet, send your students not scheduled to test to their appropriate testing/classroom locations, i.e. small group, etc.

Test Administrator’s Responsibilities Test Day Turn OFF all computers (yours, too!) Turn OFF your cell phone and put it away Display your “Do Not Disturb” sign outside your door

Test Administrator’s Responsibilities Test Day Communicate Cell Phone Policy Display Cell Phone Policy Make sure all phones are off (theirs and yours) Make sure students are not in possession of a phone…if they are, have them place it in their locker until after testing is complete

Test Administrator’s Responsibilities Test Day Begin Testing by 8:15 not 8:30 Pass out Materials – Don’t let students do ANYTHING on the Answer Document except bubble!! There is a specific test answer document for each student If a student’s name or PEIMS identification number looks wrong, call for Ms. Fields (Front Office) and ask for a new answer document If anything else looks wrong, mark the concern on a post-it and it will be corrected after testing DO NOT CHANGE ANYTHING ON ANY TEST DOCUMENT. NOTIFY THE CTC – Ms. Fields DO NOT PHONE MS. FIELDS’ CLASSROOM her students will be testing!!!!

Test Administrator’s Responsibilities Test Day Late Arrivers If a student arrives after you’ve started testing but before 9:00, the testing coordinator will come into your room to get his/her test materials and take the student to the library to read the instructions and return to your class without interruption for testing. Students that arrive after 10:00 will be assigned to another area until the assessment is complete.

Timing You are expected to announce the time at one (1) hour intervals during the test. You should announce the time in 15 minute intervals during the last hour. At the end of the time (4 hours from the starting time), the student should have the assessment complete including the bubbling.

Test Administrator’s Responsibilities DURING TESTING what To Do during testing Answer questions about test directions or procedures. Allow students to use highlighters or colored pencils in their test booklet Allow students to quietly read books after collecting their test materials Verify upon collection that students have bubbled their answers and return if they have not done so, saying, “You have not recorded all of your answers on the answer document. Please go back and mark your answers now.” what NOT To Do during testing Answer questions related to content of the test and clarify test questions Allow students to use highlighters or mechanical pencils on their answer document Allow students to quietly read books prior to turning in their test materials View, discuss, or score test booklets or answer documents Allow a child to turn in an answer document without viewing it to confirm answers have been bubbled

Test Administrator’s Responsibilities DURING TESTING What To Do during testing Walk among students as they work Allow students to work at their own individual pace Fill out your seating chart Remind students periodically to bubble their responses on their answer document Remind students to respond to every question Confirm students are working on their test Confirm students do not have non-allowed materials What NOT To Do during testing Allow students to walk around Direct students to speed up or slow down Work on computer or use phone for routine purposes Erase stray marks or darken answer-choice circles (only students can do this) Require students to first mark their answers in their test booklet and then transfer them to the answer document Allow students to talk to each other Reinforce, review, or distribute testing strategies

Test Administrator’s Responsibilities Test Day Student Breaks You may allow students to take brief breaks during testing…use your own judgment. If you take a class break, test booklets must be closed with answer documents inside and talking should be minimal and not about the test. Students may take a restroom break one at a time or as a group, but must be monitored appropriately. If a child needs to see the nurse, notify Mrs. Paiz that the child is headed to her office. In an emergency, have students close their booklet with their answer document inside.

Test Administrator’s Responsibilities Test Day When All Students are Finished… Put booklets in numerical order Place the finished answer documents in the bin Place absent students' Test Booklets and Answer Documents in the bin with a yellow sticky note Organize your bin Take down the “Cell phone” sign and the “Do Not Disturb” sign off your door – this is your signal to us you are ready to turn in your bin

Test Administrator’s Responsibilities If all of your students finish before 12:00, notify a hall monitor to watch your class while you return your bin to the STAAR Room. Beginning at 11:30, the campus administrator or counselor will come to your room and collect students who are not finished testing. Please have their booklets and answer documents available.
