What we know right now… Campus Testing Coordinator Training Nov. 3, 2016

2 One test version… Online tests will still include accessibility features Highlighter, zoom, color change, notepad, pencil, etc… Online tests with or without accommodations will be available for every grade level and test Any student could take an online test Exception - There will be no online Spanish version

3 One test version… The embedded accommodations in an online test will be turned on/off individually for each student depending on the appropriate committee decision and eligibility requirements* A student could take the online version of the test with any combination of the accommodations Text To Speech Language and Vocabulary supports Content supports * We do not yet have student eligibility requirements – expected to be available on September 23rd.

4 One test version…What does this mean?
AT the student level – those who have previously taken STAAR A or STAAR L should not see any decrease in the amount of online accommodations and support they’ve received with those test versions. At the committee level – how some of these designated supports are documented will change The online designated supports will be documented individually, as well as any supports that are not embedded within the test administration We don’t know exactly how these will need to be documented yet (9/23 TETN)

Eligibility for online accommodations? Will not know for sure until after September 23rd meeting. But…

Committee decisions that have already been made need to be updated (no staar a and no staar l versions )

7 Other changes… Expected Policy documents containing the information necessary to make decisions about accommodations/designated supports for students taking STAAR assessments beginning in the spring of 2017 To include specific eligibility criteria applicable for each type of accommodation/designated support

8 Other changes… Length of tests – HB 743:
The staar assessments will be shortened so that 85% of students will be able to complete the assessment with in 2 hours for grades 3-5 and within 3 hours in grades 6-8 How much the tests will be shortened has not yet been determined Statutory requirements for validity/reliability must also be considered AS of now, there is no indication that this will change the 4-hour time limit. Revised blueprints for STAAR assessments in grades 3-8;

9 Other changes… TELPAS Pilot Study
Spring 2018 TELPAS will move to speaking and listening as an online assessment TEA and Pearson are currently conducting Cognitive Labs with a very small sample size Spring 2017 TELPAS Pilot Study Information is due to come out later this month Some campuses may be asked to participate in the pilot study

TEA is in the process of gathering public input CSRs will be redesigned this fall

Use a Materials Control Form every time tests change hands

18 Collecting Materials from Test Administrators
After each test administration: Account for all materials Provide an individual, one-on-one check-in of each Test Administrator’s materials after every test. Count test booklets, answer documents, etc. and initial the Materials Control Form for “IN” If possible, provide waiting areas separate from the check-in areas to minimize distractions Confirm the materials you are required to return – scorables, nonscorables, or both Account for all materials that need to be returned

19 How to Avoid IEP Errors Make sure you have current information for testing requirements and accommodations for SpEd, 504 and ELL students. Schedule times to review with appropriate personnel Double-check test materials for each student with an IEP or accommodations information Verify required resources, supplemental aids, and manipulatives Make sure students requiring specific test materials such as Large Print or Braille have what they need

20 How to Avoid Eligibility Errors
Identify all eligible testers. Check for new enrollees. Track new enrollees Make sure you have correct test version information for ELL students (STAAR, STAAR L) Make sure all students know where to go for testing Verify your testing rosters to be sure you have the correct students taking the correct tests in the correct rooms

21 How to Avoid Monitoring Errors
Emphasize that Test Administrators are not allowed to leave examinees or materials unattended Tell Test Administrators to notify Coordinators immediately when improper student behavior occurs or is suspected Clearly establish relief schedules and assignments – who covers what area, which testing personnel, and when Model Active Monitoring for testing personnel during training and during test administrations
