 American author of science fiction and fantasy  Opposes modern technology  Advocates space travel!

 A statement that contradicts itself and seems like it cannot be true, but expresses a possible truth.  Sentence has two completely different parts, but they come together to create a truth.  Ex: You have to spend money to save money.

 A reference in writing to something in history (the past).  Can refer to: a person, place, event, literary work, myth or work of art.  Ex: “Whenever I see chocolate, I understand how Eve felt” said Coach Lewis.

 A set atmosphere that invokes a certain feeling for the reader.  What mood is set when Rainsford and Whitney pass by Ship-Trap Island?

 Writing that hints at what is to come.  How is foreshadowing used in “The Most Dangerous Game”?

 A specific charge of a wrongdoing.  What accusation does Rainsford make of General Zaroff?

 Mental struggle within the mind of the character. The resolution creates the plot’s suspense.  What internal conflict does Rainsford face as he is being hunted?

 Contradiction between what something appears to mean, and what it actually means.  How is General Zaroff’s treatment of his visitors ironic?

 Reason for writing.  What is the purpose of irony (in regards to the jewelry) in “The Necklace”?

 Word choice. How the words affect the depiction of the story.  What does the diction in “The Necklace” show you about the main character? (descriptions of jewels and expensive things)
