Building Health Skills Lesson 1: Building Health Skills Health Skills-specific tools and strategies that help you maintain, protect, and improve all aspects of your health. Takes time and practice

Interpersonal Skills: -clearly say what you mean -pay attention to how you say something -be a good listener -be aware of facial expressions and gestures

Refusal Skills-techniques that can help you refuse when you are urged to take part in unsafe or unhealthful behaviors. Includes: 1. Say “NO”

2. Explain why you are refusing. 3. Suggest alternatives to the proposed activity

4. Back up your words using body language. 5. Leave if necessary.

Conflict Resolution Skills “Process of ending a conflict through cooperation and problem solving.” Key: respecting the other person’s rights as well as your own.

Steps to follow when dealing with a conflict. Take time to calm down and think through the situation. When discussing the conflict, speak calmly and listen attentively, asking questions when appropriate. Use a polite tone and try to brainstorm solutions where no one loses respect. Work to resolve the conflict peacefully.

Self-Management Skills -Practicing Healthful Behaviors -Managing Stress Stress-the body’s and mind’s reactions to everyday demands. Stress management-ways to deal with or overcome the negative effects of stress.

Management Skills: -rechanneling your energy -relaxing -laughing -listening to soothing music -engaging in physical activity

Analyzing Influences Internal influences-your knowledge, values, likes,dislikes, and desires. External influences-family, friends, peer, environment, culture, laws, and media.

Accessing Reliable Health Information -parents, guardians, and other trusted adults -library resources-encyclopedia, nonfiction books -reliable Internet sites -newspaper and magazine articles by health professionals

Making Responsible Decisions and Setting Goals Lesson 2: Making Responsible Decisions and Setting Goals

Making decisions about MAJOR life issues must be done carefully and deliberately. Approach with CAUTION and “look in all directions.”

Decision-Making Model Designed to help you make decisions that will protect your rights, health, and self-respect while respecting the same for others

Step 1: State the Situation-what decision needs to be made. Step 2: List the possible choices Step 3: Weigh the possible options Step 4: Consider your values Step 5: Make a decision and take action Step 6: Evaluate your decision

Goal-something that you aim for that takes planning and work. Setting Goals Goal-something that you aim for that takes planning and work. Long term goals-long periods-sometimes months or even years to achieve.

Short-term goals-achieved fairly easily and in a short period of time. Action plan-multi-step strategy for identifying and achieving goals.

Select a goal to work on. List what you will do to reach the goal. Identify sources of help and support Set a reasonable time frame for reaching your goal Establish checkpoints to evaluate your progress Reward yourself after reaching your goal

Lesson 3: Building Character Character-those qualities that describe how a person thinks, feels, and behaves.

What is Good Character? A person with good character demonstrates core ethical values, such as responsibility, honesty, integrity, and respect. These values are held in high regard across all cultures and age groups.

Character and Health Because your character plays a huge role in your decisions, actions, and behavior, it impacts all aspects of your health.

Traits of Good Character -Trustworthiness -Respect -Responsibility -Fairness -Caring -Citizenship

Developing Your Character Stand up for your beliefs. Learn from people who demonstrate good character traits. Join volunteer groups in your school or community.

Someone whose success or behavior serves as an example for others. Positive Role Models Someone whose success or behavior serves as an example for others.
