Chapter 2 Decision Making, Character and Other Health Related Skills

2 Decision Making • Making decisions and setting goals will help give you purpose in life. • You will need to understand the short-term and long-term consequences of decisions you make. • Another responsibility is setting goals for yourself and planning how to reach those goals.

3 Decision Making Defined
• Decision Making- is the process of making a choice of finding a solution. It involves 6) steps. State the Situation, Identify the Situation in how it will affect your health. 2. List the Options, options need to be safe and ask people for suggestions. Never risk Your health or the health of others.

4 Decision Making Defined
3. Weigh the possible Outcomes, or Consequences of each option. Will this option cause serious injury? When weighing your choices, you might use the H.E.L.P. formula: H (Healthful) Will my choices affect my well being or the well being of those around me? E (Ethical) Will my choice show respect for myself and other people? L (Legal) Will I be breaking the law? Is it legal for someone my age? P (Parent Approval) Would my parents approve of my decision?

5 Decision Making Defined
4.Considering Values, when making a decision always consider your values. 5. Make a Decision and Act, Once You have weighed your options, Consider the risks and consequences then you are ready to take action. Choose the course which seems to best support your values. 6.Evaluate Your Decision, after taking action evaluate your decision. Did you expect the outcome to turnout the way it did?

6 Setting Goals •Setting Realistic Goals, the process of working toward something that you want to accomplish. Health Related goals help you improve your physical, mental/emotional and social health. Two Types of Goals: Short-Term and Long-Term. Short-Term, are goals you plan to accomplish in a short period of time like in a couple of hours, days or weeks. Long-Term goals- are goals you plant to achieve within a period of months or years such as learning how to play a instrument or becoming a professional athlete. Many short-term goals are stepping stones to achieving long-term goals.

7 The Goal-Setting Process
The Goal-Setting Process, helps to focus on achievable goals and make the best use of your time as well as energy. Step 1: Identify a Specific Goal and Write it Down? Step 2: List the Steps You will take to Reach Your Goal, big goals require breaking them down into smaller tasks. Short-Term Goals to Achieve the Long-Term Goal.

8 The Goal-Setting Process
Step 6: Give Yourself a Reward, Celebrate Your Accomplishments, such as cheat meal or buying something for yourself related to your goal.

9 Building Your Character
What is Character? Character is the way in which a person thinks, feels and acts. It involves understanding, caring about and acting upon certain values. Character in Action, good character is not something You show only once in a while. It is part of who you are and how you live. It strengths your relationship with others and promotes good health.

10 Building Your Character
There are 6) main traits of good Character as listed: Trustworthiness, Respect, Responsibility, Fairness, Caring and Citizenship. Integrity is the quality of doing what you know is right even when no one is looking. Tolerance is the ability to accept other people as they are diverse from different cultures and backgrounds.

11 Building Your Characte
Prejudice is an opinion of fear formed without having facts or firsthand knowledge. Ex: forming a negative opinion formed for no good reason against racial, religious or cultural group. Accountability, this is a willingness to answer for your actions and decision. Empathy, this is the ability to understand and show concern for another person’s feelings.

12 Developing Other Health Skills
There are 10) Health Skills which affect your physical, mental/emotional, and social health. Communication, is the clear exchange of ideas and information, listen when others express theirs. Verbal communication involves a speaker or writer on one end, and a listener or reader on the other. Non-Verbal, body language and facial expression.

13 Developing Other Health Skills
Refusal Skills, are communication strategies that help you say no to others effectively. Maybe it’s activity which goes against your values-something you feel is wrong or unhealthy. These skills can help you stay true to your beliefs and people will respect you for being honest about you needs and wants. The steps for practicing refusal skills are based on the letters in the word S.T.O.P. -Say no in a firm Voice. -Tell why not. -Offer another idea. -Promptly leave. It’s important to meant what you say by using strong body language such as eye contact, crossed arms and a serious expression.

14 Developing Other Health Skills
Conflict Resolution, involves solving a disagreement in a way that satisfies both sides. Conflict is part of life, learning to deal in a healthy way is important and use positive healthy behavior such as “I” statements. Accessing Information, having correct information, up to date information. Media- are the various methods for communicating information such as newspapers, magazines, television and internet.

15 Developing Other Health Skills
Analyzing Influences, recognizing factors that affect or influence your health which are inside or outside of you. Practice Healthful Behaviors, helps you balance your health triangle and includes taking care of yourself while avoiding risks. Stress Management, can help you develop strategies for managing stress include relaxation and exercise. Stress- is your body’s response to change. It is a normal part of life. Advocacy, “support it or speak out in favor or it”. Means informing others about health practices encouraging healthful behaviors. It includes warning people about possible risks and sharing knowledge of positive health behaviors.
