Why Instructional Design? Prepared by: Beatrice Ghirardini, Chiara Nicodemi, Fabiana Biasini Instructional Designers, Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) September 2013

Why Instructional Design? Instructional design is the entire process from the analysis of learning needs to the delivery of a system to meet those needs. It includes the development of learner-centered instructional materials and activities, to transform information into relevant content that is easy to learn.

Why Instructional Design? Instructional Designers work much like architects, who analyse, plan and design before the actual construction begins.

Instructional Design uses a learner-centered approach Only the information NEEDED by the target audience, presented in a way that FACILITATE learning Organize your material Provide learning guidance Why Instructional Design? Not everything you know about the subject

You can use ID methods to organize your materials Select Chunk and structure Present (Use memory devices) Why Instructional Design?

Why Instructional Design? Who are our learners? What is their background? What are their features? What do they need to do? What do they need to learn? What do I want them to be able to do after the training? How can I help them learn what they need? Which methods will I use? How will I determine if they have learned? Which content will enable them to learn what they need? Which techniques will I use to turn this content into learning? Did they like the course? How can I improve it? Have they accomplished the objectives? Are they using what they have learned? What will be the outcomes? Audience analysis Who?
