ADDIE Instructional Design Model
Analysis What is Instructional Design? There are many definitions of Instructional Design (ID). Smith and Ragan define it as “the systematic and reflective process of translating principles of learning and instruction into plans for instructional materials, activities, information resources, and evaluation (1999).” What is the ADDIE Model? Many ID models exist, however a review of the models indicate that most consist of the same basic elements: Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation. Also, the activities in the model are not linear in nature. Instead the design process can be described as iterative and self-correcting (Gustafson & Branch, 2002). Needs Assessment What knowledge and/or skills do the learners need to acquire? (objectives) Not every Needs Assessment must be complex – scalable depending on size of project. Involves data collection – where are we now, what are our objectives for future. Analysis Design Development Implementation Evaluation Addie: Analysis Analysis
5
Analysis- Who is the audience?
Audience Analysis Analysis- Who is the audience? Understanding- What is the audience's knowledge of the subject? Demographics- What is their age, gender, education background etc.? Interest- Why are they using your product. Environment- Where will this product be sent/viewed? Needs- What are the audience's needs associated with your training topic? Customization- What specific needs should be addressed relating to the audience? Expectations- What does the audience expect to learn from your product? Analysis Design Development Implementation Evaluation Addie: Analysis Analysis

Content Analysis Does the needed training already exist?
Use Subject Matter Experts (SME) to help analyze. Utilize members of target audience and project sponsors. Consider how to utilize existing resources. Analysis Design Development Implementation Evaluation Addie: Analysis Analysis

Technical Analysis Establish minimum technological requirements for the learner Establish what software and hardware will be needed to develop the course Establish what course management systems and server capabilities Establish what software and hardware the instructor and developer will require Analysis Design Development Implementation Evaluation Addie: Analysis Analysis

Structural Analysis What should the structure of the course be?
Online? Instructor led? Blended? Single session? Duration, in light of constraints. Time distribution? Analysis Design Development Implementation Evaluation Addie: Analysis Analysis

Resource Assessment What resources are needed?
What resources do we currently have? Are the expenses justified for acquiring new resources? Analysis Design Development Implementation Evaluation Addie: Analysis Analysis

What happens in the Design Phase?
Continue with Subject Matter Analysis. Identify performance objectives and apply instructional strategies according to content type. Create storyboards. Design user interface. Collect needed materials. Analysis Design Development Implementation Evaluation Addie: Design Bibliography

What happens in the Development phase?
The development phase in the ADDIE model of instructional design addresses the tools and processes used to create instructional material. This stage includes: story boards, coding, Graphic User Interface, and creating all multimedia elements. 12
What happens in the Development phase?
The development phase builds on the objectives and measurement tools constructed in the design phase. The product of this phase is a detailed plan of action that lists step-by-step procedures for implementing the change. The plan also needs to include who is responsible for which elements of the project, and time schedules and deadlines. 13
What happens in the Development phase?
During the development phase, all: Audio Video and text materials are collected, prepared, or created. Documentation is prepared and the product is ready to be tested. Analysis Design Development Implementation Evaluation Addie: Development Development

Addie: Implementation
What happens in the Implementation phase? In the implementation phase of the ADDIE model an plan is developed. This plan establishes the implementation timeline and procedures for training the facilitators and the learner delivering the final product. The final product is developed based on needs and errors discovered while utilizing a prototype product with members of the target audience. Addie: Implementation
What happens in the Implementation phase? With the project ready for delivery, the learning environment is prepared by training the facilitators and learners, and placing all tools for full implementation (instruction).
