ELDER’S LEADERSHIP CERTIFICATION LEVEL - 1

Principles of Effective Leadership

Leadership Definitions “A leader is someone who shows the direction and helps people get there.”

Leadership Definitions “Leadership is mobilizing others toward a goal shared by the leader and followers.” “A leader is someone who does something for the people, by the people and through the people.”

Leadership Definitions “A leader is someone who makes followers or disciples.” “To lead is the art of planning, organizing, implementing, motivating and evaluating.”

Jesus’ Leadership Style “Whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first, must be slave of all” (Mark 10:44).

Jesus’ Leadership Style To be a leader within God’s church carries a requirement of being willing to be a servant.

Isaiah 42 – Pattern of Leadership Dependence on God God Delights in you Modesty Jesus avoided opportunities to call attention to Himself. Empathy Perseverance Anointing

Leader vs. Manager Leaders deal with the direction. Managers deal with the speed. The leader deals with the vision, keeping the mission in, and motivating people to work. The manager deals with establishing structure and systems to get those results.

Team Leadership Having many people in the organization takes responsibility in sharing the leadership.

Team Building Principles Choose a gifted and committed leader A person – “whose heart God has touched”. A person willing to be united under the Lordship of Jesus Christ. This will allow the group to avoid confusion, distrust and disunity.

Team Building Principles Have a clear focus that is understood. Choose team members who are gifted in the areas you need. Establish expectation that each team member will keep the leader informed. Provide learning opportunities. Team members must show respect for each other and the leader.

Team Building Principles Encourage risk taking. Recognize that failures will happen. See failures as a refining process. Remain flexible. Delegate. Model and expect sincerity, transparency, and vulnerability.

Team Building Principles Go directly to a team member if conflict arises. Each team member is a leader in training. Promote a team mentality. Remove team members who are not participating. Stay on goal.

The Successful Leader Will recognize the gifts and talents of others

The Poor Leader Fall prey to a reluctance to let the reins of power slip from their own hand. Feel threatened by capable team members. Fail to delegate authority.

Jethro’s Principles of Delegation Exodus 18 “The work is too heavy for you; you cannot handle it alone.” “You and these people will only wear yourselves out.” The results will be more satisfying if you delegate. Moses would still be leader… “If you do this… you will be able to stand the strain.”

The Benefits Moses Received Less physical and mental exhaustion. People more satisfied. Able to focus on the larger issues. Able to use the gifts of others. Developed a team of “allies” determined to accomplish the same goal. Developed a system that would be effective even after he was no longer the leader.

Dealing With Stress Be sure, stress will come. Give thanks in all circumstances. Build your security in Christ. Jesus tells us: “Abide in Me…” “Come near to God and He will come near to you”. Get alone - whatever it takes. Your security in Christ will not change even through tough times. Strength comes in abiding.

Why Some Leaders Do Not Delegate Difficulty in admitting limitation. Desire to control everything. Lack of trust in the ones being led. Doesn’t know how to train people. Ignorance about the benefits of delegating. “Delegating stretches time, reduces stress and motivates the team.”

Effective Leadership Characteristics Commitment to God. Leaders need to have a sense of responsibility for service and contribution to others. Strongly defined sense of vision and able to clearly articulate it. The vision has to be shared and it has to be meaningful and make sense to the people who are involved.

Effective Leadership Characteristics To be effective leader, you must be a continual learner. Leaders must be seen as trustworthy. They have to be open in their communication. The work will be far more effective when done by a team.

Effective Leadership Characteristics The leader should not overreact to negative behaviors, criticism, and human weakness. Effective leaders constantly provide opportunities for others to develop leadership skills. Enthusiasm is a motivating behavior.

Effective Leadership Characteristics All leaders face problems at some point. Without problems there would be no improvements. The leader must be able to communicate and listen well.

Effective Leadership Characteristics Leadership is always moving toward a future goal. The effective leader needs to be an efficient time manager and organizer.

Effective Leadership Characteristics It is important to regularly exercise: Physically Mentally Emotionally Spiritually
