Insight into the Development of a Leader’s Profile Facilitated by Daryl A. Anderson, SR

Good Leaders? Challenge status quo Relinquish true responsibility to those who can handle it Are confident Breathe life into almost any situation Care about those who are led by them

Questionable Leaders? Lack direction Fail to develop attainable goals Fail to praise others Fail to effectively use a reward system Fail to provide feedback Criticize the performance of others without providing clear directions for progress

A Leader’s Responsibility is to: Select appropriate resources for different circumstances Orient the members of the team to the mission Set goals and minimum standards of performance Motivate the team members Assist in the development of the strategic plan Provide constructive feedback Plan constantly

The path to positive results through the leadership process? The Leader must set goals He must train the team on how to implement the strategy and plan He must build positive relationships He must motivate the team to strive for a positive result He must monitor the team’s performance He must give feedback on the results

Goal setting! Should be set before any action is taken Should be accompanied by milestones or benchmark points to gauge effectiveness Should be established around the group’s priorities Should be communicated, periodically

Educating the team! Determine what needs to be taught before time is wasted on fruitless pursuits Select appropriate venues for training (meetings, in-services, workshops, on the job) Know when to teach and when to be taught

Promoting togetherness! When the Leader understands what motivates the team members, he will be able to garner their trust The Leader must spend time with the team members during the process and outside of the process The Leader must lead when it is expected The Leader must promote positive talk

Getting them to get the job done! The Leader should provide rewards to reinforce appropriate and desired results The rewards should be provided just as the behavior desiring the reward is exhibited The reward should be sincere Multiple positive results mean multiple rewards Reward stars without destroying the team

Know what is going on! The Leader must always assess the effectiveness of the team’s performance The Leader must know when the team is no longer has the strength to continue The Leader must know if deadlines or benchmarks have been missed or met

Let them know how they did! This can be done during the regular training sessions or moments This can be done posting the results in a common place for view This can be done by correlating all of the performance information into one report This can be enhanced by insuring that the team understands the task, periodically
