RUNNING START  A partnership between Clark College and Washington Public Schools  Earn college credits that also apply to high school graduation requirements

WHAT DOES THAT MEAN?  You are choosing to go to college  All courses will now be permanently on your college transcript  You are officially a college student!

THE STUDENT  Meets deadlines and brings EV Form to Clark each quarter  Reads and responds to s sent to Clark student address  Seeks help from instructors and Running Start advisors  Pays any fees before deadline  Registers for courses  Plans around high school schedule  Seeks high school counselor to keep on track with high school graduation requirements  Completes all Advisory assignments and remains in communication with RHS Advisor WHO IS RESPONSIBLE?

PROS  Perception that courses are more rigorous – more material covered in less amount of time (three quarters)  Credits may be used towards high school diploma and college degree  Keep in mind that we will not give special distinction at the RHS graduation for this achievement  Flexible schedule  Lots of course choices and schedule times  College tuition is paid by the State  Fall, winter, and spring terms only – not summer

KEEP IN MIND  You are responsible for your own transportation  You are responsible for book, lab fees, and course fees  Communication and connection to RHS requires more effort  You are responsible for working on homework on your own and without teacher’s assistance  You are responsible for making up absences and class assignments at Clark  Probation and suspension policy – every point counts & GPA may be affected  Different atmosphere– give your self time to adjust (environment, system, grading, teachers)  All graduation requirements must be completed by Winter quarter of your Senior year

PARENTS SHOULD KNOW  College has open door policy – anyone and everyone may attend Clark  It is college and is an adult environment  There is no censorship in the classroom  No special allowances are made because of the student’s age  Parents do not have access to student records  Instructors aren’t required to monitor attendance  Clarks suggests that parents should NOT contact faculty  Your student may miss out on opportunities here at RHS

HOW DO I KNOW WHICH COURSES TO TAKE?  Consider:  RHS Graduation Requirements (need to be satisfied by Winter Quarter Senior Year  Equivalent courses  Credit conversion  Meeting your goals AA? Enrichment? Transfer to a four-year?  RHS schedule

CREDIT 4 ““ = ““ = ““ = ““ = 0.2 Note: For course equivalencies please refer to the Acceptable Equivalent Courses sheet or see your counselor for more information Example 1: Student takes College Algebra/MATH 111 for 5 credits at the community college The 5 credits at the community college convert to 1 credit at RHS  5 (CC credits) x 0.2 (ratio of CC to RHS) = 1 (RHS Credits) Example 2: Student takes International Economics /ECON 120 for 3 credits at the community college The 3 credits at the community college convert to 0.6 credit at RHS  3 (CC credits) x 0.2 (ratio of CC to RHS) = 0.6 (RHS Credits) Example 3: Student takes Hiking/PE 132 for 1 credit at the community college The 1 credit at the community college converts to 0.2 credit at RHS 1 (CC credits) x 0.2 (ratio of CC to RHS) = 0.2 (RHS Credits)

ENROLLMENT  OSPI Bulletin  Students participating in Running Start programs are funded up to a combined maximum enrollment of 1.2 FTE  Enrollment Verification Form needs to be submitted to Clark quarterly to indicate how much time the student will be at the HS  Each class taken at RHS decreases the number of college credits the state will pay for  Each HS Class accounts for 0.2 FTE (including Jazz Band/Choir)

ADVISORY AND CULMINATING PROJECT  Advisory requirement must be completed at RHS  Culminating Project may not be completed independently or substituted with alternate courses  If you are not on campus during Advisory, then you will be responsible to access the lessons and remain in consistent communication with your Advisor

WIAA ELIGIBILITY  Athletes must complete a contract to be enrolled as a full-time student  Commit to take and complete the approved academic program  The purpose is to record, in writing, the expectations of students while registered at Running Start and participating in sports through RHS  Read it carefully  Get all signatures  Return to Athletic director for each athletic season

STAY CONNECTED TO RHS  Be proactive in keeping in touch with RHS  High School graduation requirements are the priority. All need to be completed by the end of Winter quarter in the senior year.  You are responsible for keeping in touch with RHS  Meet with your RHS counselor at the end of each term at Clark  Inform your counselor of any changes with Clark  Check RHS website  Read the daily bulletin on the website  Watch the Reader board  Subscribe to Remind101

ENROLLMENT VERIFICATION FORM  Can be found on the RHS Counseling website  Fill out Student Information  Fill out box for the courses you plan to take  Available on the Clark website, under the Academics tab Course descriptions Class Schedule Use “Schedule Options” tab to filter your search Use “Annual Class Planner” to help with planning  Schedule a meeting with your Counselor Double check graduation requirements and enrollment  Take form with Counselor and Parent signatures to Clark before Registration  If your EVF is not to Clark before tuition is due, you will be dropped from your classes

ENROLLMENT VERIFICATION FO RM

 Online orientation and online advising at Clark College are mandatory before you can register  New fall students can complete online orientation and online advising between May 5 and 22 by 5 p.m.  New RS students can register for fall and summer starting May 27 if they have completed the online orientation and advising before 5 p.m. on May 22 ONLINE REGISTRATION

 Credit maximum funded by RS depends on high school and Skills Center course load  You may not get your first choice of class or time  Have a back-up plan and enroll in open classes that count toward high school graduation  You must complete online orientation & online advising before you can register online  For subsequent quarters, your registration date/time is assigned by number of credits earned

 Wednesday, September 3 rd classes begin at RHS  Monday, September 22 nd Fall classes begin at Clark FALL QUARTER 2014

SCHEDULE  RHS is your priority – your schedule is your responsibility  Part-time students are expected to be on time and in full attendance (no early release or late arrival) for any RHS class  Please take our Wednesday schedule into account  Consider schedules conflicts, equivalency, absents  No excuse to miss RHS: classes, tests, meetings, sports responsibilities, travel, etc.  Make arrangements ahead of time at the college  Talk to your Clark teacher on the first day of class or as soon as you find out about a conflict  Ultimately you are responsible for the classes you schedule and complete either at Clark or RHS

GRADES  Clark College grades may cause a drop in grade point average and class rank  RHS administrators and/or counselors will not intervene regarding grades granted at Clark

FEES  $20 Application Fee  Running Start pays for your tuition, not fees or textbooks  Print your “Student Schedule” to determine fees  Pay fees at Clark’s Cashier Office or online before the deadline  $6.75 per credit charge plus class fees

 A student will be considered eligible for a fee waiver if eligible for free or reduced lunch at RHS  The student must bring documentation to the Running Start Office before the first day of the quarter to receive a fee waiver for that quarter  Not all fees can be waived  Eligible students will have tuition paid for above the 1.2 FTE FEE WAIVER
