What is Running Start? Program for eligible 11 th and 12 th grade students to take most college classes with most or all tuition paid Students earn college credit while meeting high school graduation requirements 1 st priority for RS students is to meet high school graduation requirements Eligibility for six quarters (Fall, Winter, and Spring of junior and senior school year) REGISTER EARLY! Enrollment is never guaranteed Results in savings on college tuition

COLLEGE CREDIT IN HIGH SCHOOL  Earn “dual credit” which means: Meet high school graduation requirements AND college credits at the same time.

 Must be in 11 th and 12 th grade.  Eligibility for 2 years  6 quarters (Fall, Winter Spring) for junior and senior year.  Tuition is FREE for college level classes. As a regular student at EdCC, tuition for 1 year of full time classes is about $4,000. At UW Seattle, tuition is nearly $12,000. Running Start

YOU ARE A COLLEGE STUDENT

Diverse Student Population

Responsibility/Independence

Classes Rigorous Fast Pace

Grades and Records  College sends grades to High School.  Grades become a permanent part of the student’s record – including college transcript.  One 5 credit class = 1.0 high school credits.

Parental Access  Parents don’t have access to your records.  Unless release signed by student. Edmonds Community College follows federal guidelines concerning student privacy rights and access to student records.

Other Considerations Running Start AND sports. Conflicts with High School activities. Different vacations/breaks Expenses. Transportation.

APPLICATION DATES FOR FALL 2016 March 15 to June 17 th Preferable – Get it done by end of school before summer break. June 18 to September 19 th Have to wait until counselors return. CLASSES START SEPTEMBER 19, 2016

STEPS TO ENROLL Apply Determine Placement Meet with High School Counselor Complete & Submit Paperwork

Am I ready for Running Start? Are you a focused, independent student? Do you want to take even more responsibility for your education? Will you miss the “high school experience?” Can you arrange transportation? There is none provided by the school district. Can you handle the expenses?

Full-time or part time? 5 credits at the college is the same as 1.0 credit at LHS. Think about the classes you want to take at each and make a plan that works for the entire year. Calculated on a quarterly basis. High School ClassesMaximum RS credits 0-115.0 212.0 39.0 46.0 5-63.0

Is Running Start better than AP? You can have a demanding schedule through RS or build one at LHS with Honors and Advanced Placement or a combination. RS transcripts all college credit each quarter. AP is a nationally-known program that might be better if you apply to college out-of-state. Two very different classroom experiences.

Good news or bad? Remember the potential impact of RS classes on your GPA: If you get an A in a 5 credit RS quarter-long class – that is like getting an A both first and second semester at LHS. But if you get a D in the same RS class – that will hurt your GPA because it is the same as getting a D both semesters of a year-long class at LHS. EdCC will place students on probationary status if they don’t maintain a 2.0 GPA – repeat offenders can no longer take RS.

Running Start Process at LHS  Once accepted, students need to make an appointment to meet with their counselor each quarter to plan out their classes and complete paperwork. Appointments are made with the Counseling Secretary and can last up to 30 minutes.  Running Start students must register for 2016-2017 as if they are taking all classes at LHS. We will adjust schedules later.

Other Information…  A list of approved Running Start courses (full eligibility) will be posted on our Counseling website.  Sometimes conflicts arise in schedules---schedule your classes around what your top priorities are.  Students can choose to attend full time or part time--- it is up to you!  It is still possible to do sports AND Running Start.  Per current ASB policy, you must be enrolled in 5 classes at LHS to be an ASB officer (student would be limited to 3 credits at Running Start).
