FILM POSTER ANALYSIS The aim of a film poster is to sell the film and attract the audience to go and see it.

Tagline – ‘someone is missing’ creates mystery. People will want to know who’s missing and why therefore enticing them to see the film. Shows the genre of the film as a thriller. Also hints at narrative. Does have to find someone? Main actors name – ‘Leonardo DiCaprio’ is a huge, well known actor with good reputation – people more likely to see the film if they know he’s in it. Masthead - Title of film, written in capitals, big so it stands out. Written in red to stand out against dark background and also red connotes blood, danger etc. Font is slightly decayed which makes it look slightly eerie. Release - red so stands out and people know when to go see it if like the look of it. Doesn’t show the day as just ‘October’ is easier to remember. Directors name – if people have seen previous films he’s done which they like they’re more likely to go see this film Image of Island – must be the main setting due to the title of the film. Looks like a dark, abandoned place. Looks very eerie and creepy. Shows genre of film as being a thriller. Also adds to the mystery of what’s on this island. Lighthouse – abandoned lighthouse is seen as being scary due to there only being one way in and out, like being trapped. Adds to the disturbing atmosphere. Main image –Holding a match which shows it’s dark which connotes danger. He looks as though he’s looking for something, tense expression. What’s he looking for? Connotes mystery and adds to the reveal of the genre. Close up of face to show emotion and add to the intensity of the image. Male main character which is stereotypical in thriller films. Image is of main actor Leonardo DiCaprio. Even if people don’t know his real name they will recognise him therefore enticing them to see the film. Raining and rough sea – Shows there’s a storm- negative connotation's. Depressing atmosphere. Billing Card - Promotional information advertises companies behind the film and if audience recognises them they’re more likely to go see it. All written in same font to as to show they’re all equal. Big name productions shows it’s mainstream film and adds to the star persona of film. Logos of production companies – to advertise them and again if the audience recognise them it entices them to see the film. Written in same font as not to show favourites however Leonardo DiCaprio is written in bigger font and in bold so it stands out and he’s a main factor of enticing people to see the film. The poster is dark with drained colour, only colour from title and release month. This creates mystery, danger and an unnerving feel which are all negative connotations, all of which show it’s a thriller film.

Main actors name – big bold letters in bright colour so it stands out. Red connotes danger and death. Only his surname as it’s so iconic there’s no need for full name. Big, well known actor with good reputation therefore people are more likely to see this film if they know he’s in it. Main image – of main character. Expressionless face (not giving away anything, shows he’s serious about something) and wearing sunglasses which hides his identity, connotes mystery and intensity. Code written in his glasses which shows they’re not normal sunglasses, makes audience wonder who he really is and entices them to see the film. Hints at narrative: he’s a robot. He’s holding a gun which connotes danger, death and violence which reveals the genre as being a thriller, furthermore main character is mail which is stereotypical in thriller films. When this film was realised in 1984 normal people wouldn’t be wearing leather jackets and fingerless gloves. This creates mystery to the audience, enticing them to see this film. This hints at the narrative that he’s from the future. Billing Card - Promotional information advertises companies behind the film and if audience recognises them they’re more likely to go see it. All written in same font to as to show they’re all equal. Written in white to make it stand out against dark background. Masthead - Title of film, written in metallic, shiny capital letters. Stands out however not as much as actors name. Shiny letters hint at narrative. Metallic looks hints at him being a robot as robots are made from metal. Red lines – remind me of lasers or the gun which uses a laser sight to aim. This could connote violence. This also links to him holding a gun. Chest showing - strong, good looking man attracts girls to see the film. Dark colours – The use of black background makes it seem like a gloomy film. The only colour is red suggesting blood, and violence which links to the gun. They’re not giving much away in the poster which makes the audience wonder what’s happening and want to find out more, enticing them to see the film.

Overall poster only uses one colour, red, and the two shades of black and white. The limited colours gives it negative feel, not very happy atmosphere. Also the colour red connotes blood, death and violence. Also the idea of infection is a post apocalyptic theme as it deals with real life fears, overall this reveals the genre as a post modern, dystopia thriller. Scratches - this connotes violence and gives the poster an eerie feel. Lead Image – black so stands out on red background. Decayed, scratches makes it feel unnerving. Big Ben in the image gives away the setting. Man walking through London, only person in image/in London. Seems lonely, Is he looking for someone? Maybe he’s the one infected? Maybe everyone else is infected apart from him? Makes audience wonder what’s happened to him enticing them to see the film. Furthermore shows main character is male which is a convention is post modern dystopia films. Can’t see facial expression which creates mystery. Tagline – top of poster almost as big as masthead, in white letters so it attracts audience attention. Tagline reveals some of the narrative, people will want to see what the infection was and how it caused devastation or who it caused devastation to. Also it’s like a countdown until something happens and audience will want to know what happens. All of this entices the audience to see the film. Directors name – if people have seen films he’s done before they’re more likely to go see this film. Masthead - Written in white letters and big in middle of poster to draw attention. Title links in the tagline and people will want to see what happens after the 28 days. Behind masthead is an image of the infection sign. Again this links with the tag line (day 3: infection). As this is here it means the infection is a main part in the narrative and people will want to know what the infection is and what it has done to cause so much devastation, attracting them to see the film. Tagline – second tagline smaller that other and doesn’t stand out as much. Billing card – information about who was involved e.g. Production companies. If people recognise them they’re more likely to see the film. Production logos – if people don’t know the names they’d recognise the logos as they’re so iconic, again if audience know of them they're more likely to want to see the film.
