Marketing. By Ellie Wright

Marketing We have decided that we are going to market our film by using our film trailer, film posters and a magazine cover. Looking at other films trailers, posters and magazine covers that our similar to ours we can work out what is the best way to do this for our own film. Looking at Brighton Rocks poster and trailer it gives us an idea of what we should make ours like as we also have crime as our genre. Our main advertising is our trailer this would be released sometime in autumn as our film is quite a dark crime film it would make it more appealing I think to our target audience at that time of the year and more people go to the cinema in the autumn and winter. As it is an independent film it would be released in small cinemas around London and Brighton. Our unique selling point would be that our trailer is quite postmodern in the way that we have a female protagonist and also our film noir parts of it which is different to other films you see today. Also that it is set in Brighton might be good as not many films are set there and that it maybe be more appealing to people that live around Brighton or near to it. Our film trailer will be used on social networking sites like Facebook. This will promote it cheaply and to a lot of people. Also around Brighton where our film is set we will put on the ground a white chalk outline of a body like you used to get in old crime films where a person had been murdered and have #openoureyes which is our tag line and if they go onto the social networking site twitter and type that in then they will come to our twitter page. This will fit with our film noir, old style film trailer and with our younger target audience that will use twitter. We had inspiration off of the film Monsters and how they created infected zones around London to promote their film.

Film Poster Research. Crime film posters like all posters have to be eye catching mainly they use big bold fonts for the titles and tag lines as this is what your want your target audience to remember. Also they normally have a big picture of the main character this is I think to show off who is in the film and if it is some one well known then people who might see the poster will be more willing to see the film if they like the actor or actress who is in the film. A tag line is a very short sentence that kind of explains the film or adds to the title. Ours is Open Your Eyes. This is a play on words because our title is Brighton i, the eye part of our tag line links them together and it also explains a bit of the story of our film. Our unique selling point on our poster is the tag line and also the fact we have made it black and white this links to our film noir aspect of our film. We were also thinking because of this creating a modern and old, vintage type of poster and mixing the two to create a postmodern element to our poster.

Film Poster Research Looking at the poster of Brighton Rock it does fit in with the conventions of a crime film poster. The title is in a very bold font and with colours that are very loud in comparison to the rest of the poster. This makes the title stand out to people who look at this poster as their eyes will be drawn to it. They don’t seem to have put a tag line on this poster however I think this maybe because they wanted to focus on the title of the film. However they do have that it was biased on the book at the top this is good as people who might have read the book and enjoyed it they may want to go see this movie as well and I think that is there unique selling point as not many films are biased on books and advertise it. The main character of Pinky is in the middle of the poster, this shows the people looking at this poster that he is an important character within the film as he is the only character on the poster. Also the setting is told through the poster as done with Photoshop there is the Brighton pier inside of him showing that the film is biased in Brighton and that it will have a lot to do with the story of the film also this shows that this poster is quite postmodern in the fact it uses a lot of Photoshop and challenging the conventions by not having a tag line. The colours of him are very muted and not very strong this makes your eyes focus on the title. Even though most of the poster is white the picture of the main character is quite sullen due to his facial expression and the colour also you can see that the picture of the pier inside him is at night and may hit to the target audience that this is a crime or thriller film. From looking at this poster I think I will use the conventions of this poster for example the big title. But may try and create a post modern element by trying to combine the character and the setting so it shows the audience that there is a link between the two.

Magazine Research Magazines are a very good way to promote films especially film magazines. This is because you get advertising but you also get it to people who love films as people who will buy the magazine know it is a film magazine, so will like to watch them and go see the latest films. These magazines are like a taster of what might be in the film as the usually have interviews with directors or actors in the film or revile a bit about the plot. This entices people to want to go see the film as they will already know a bit about it so will want to go watch the whole thing. On the covers of these magazines like Empire or total film they use things to attract there audiences to buy the magazine and go and watch the film. They use things like bold fonts, bright colours and big pictures of actors or scenes from the movie. This will catch the target audiences eye as it will stand out. In the poster we created we used the film magazine empire as we know that is a well known film magazine. We used like our poster our character in black and white as most other covers would be in colour and this would give it a postmodern feel and fit will our film noir style of our film. We also used most of the colour of the writing as red and grey this would make it stand out against the black and white picture we used and draw attention to it. We used things like ‘take a sneak peek’ this would attract our audience to want to take a look inside.

Magazine Research Looking at this cover from empire magazine, it does fit with the conventions of a film magazine. It uses things like bold fonts for example where it has the title of the film it is really big and bold this will stand out to people looking at this magazine because of those things and this is important as this is the main thing that the target audience need to remember. It also has I big picture of the main character this will attract people to it as if they like the actor who plays that character or like on this magazine they may like the character they play like BatMan this will make them want to watch the film and buy the magazine. This also has things to attract them to read it like saying ‘the ultimate exclusive!’ at the top this makes the target audience feel like they will only get this information about this film from this magazine so will be more tempted to buy it. Down the side of this magazine it has other things included in the magazine. This will make people think that they aren't just getting the things about that movie there are other things too. The colours of the font are all very bright. This will attract the target audience's eyes to the writing explaining what is in the magazine. They use mainly primary colours like yellow, blue and red.
