1 “Q” title and logo. Works as branding and helps the audience recognise the magazine from afar. The font used is quite sophisticated. The colours used- red and white, are colours that contrast and are very eye catching. It is also located in the Sweet Spot. Use of imperative: In this banner they’re telling the audience that they must have the songs they have suggested, this order makes the audience wonder why? And how they can be so sure about those songs. The music industry naturally uses different media (convergence). This would appeal to a modern day, younger audience because they’re more dependent to the internet and technology in general. Freebie: They’re also selling the artist by adding a free track as a giveaway when the magazine is bought. They have included the little tagline on the magazine: “Discover Great Music” to tell the audience what the magazines aim is. It seems to suggest that the magazine will help the audience discover new/ approved music. Does it hint at genres of music or audience? Use of language- They use buzzwords, for example “exclusive” , this suggests that it would be a luxury for the audience to buy and read this magazine because they have information that you can’t find anywhere else. Consider applying 2 Step flow theory here. They have used well known music celebrity names on the front of the magazine to pull in the audience and show that they’re up to date and interview/ report on relevant music artists. The main cover line uses the featured artists’ name & takes up a big part of the page to sell the magazine. It is bold and the informal writing style makes it seem more artistic and more informal. Her name kind of looks like it’s written in pink lipstick …. associations / image created? Language used? The puff is bold and the yellow colour really works to draw the audiences’ eyes. The reference to festivals shows that they know their stuff when it comes to the music industry, and can suggest where the audience should be going (personal Relationship, Surveillance) Main image: Apart from the blood, her skin is flawless and she is looking absolutely beautiful, wearing a little pink dress and even a tiara. This makes her seem like an innocent, naïve, cute little girl (little girls commonly dress up as princesses). The blood turns this beautiful, girly-girl into a mysterious, naughty/ badass girl that the audience may aspire to be like. (Personal Identity). They have used alliteration here repeated “F”. “Fall apart” is juicy gossip, something that the audience could talk to their friends about (Personal relationships and surveillance.) Nice! The blood falling from lanas head makes the audience curious as to why this is on the front cover. This makes her seem dangerous, interesting and shows that she seems to be challenging the stereotypical Female role, because, although she is dressed up like a princess, her direct gaze shows us that she is powerful and the blood running from her forehead shows that she has a dark/ dangerous side. (Dyer’s Star) Rhetorical question makes the audience want to find out what they’re talking about. It’s a great way to intrigue the audience and persuade them to buy the magazine to read the feature article. The word “bloody” also links to the blood on Lana’s head. This develops the idea that Lana is not the “pop Princess” that she seems to be. That she has a darker side to her. The barcode is a must have for the magazine to be sold. It also has the price of the magazine and the website details so that the audience can look the, up online or ask any enquiries. This therefore Convergence – with other types of media – appeals to …?
