BIT3024/34 INDUSTRIAL TRAINING BRIEFING Prepared By: Industrial Training Committee 7 November 2014

OBJECTIVES To prepare the students for their professional careers upon graduation To expose students to the 'real' working environment and get acquainted with the organization structure, business operations and administrative functions. To have hands-on experience in the students’ related field so that they can relate and reinforce what has been taught at the university. To enhance the employment opportunities and employability of our graduates.

How are BIT3024 and BIT3034 different? For student intake BEFORE June 2010/11 (in BETA year) Grading system: PASS or FAIL Credit hour: 6 credit hours Duration: 15 weeks For student intake June 2010/2011 ONWARDS (in BETA year) Duration: 12 weeks ***Requirement: BIT3034/3024 is the ONLY ONE subject that can be taken for Trimester 3, 2014/2015 for all BBA and BBKM Gamma students

INDUSTRIAL TRAINING PROGRAM BIT3034------12 weeks Commencing date: 2nd March until 24th May 2015 Latest attachment date – 15th March 2015 Nature of jobs must be related to the areas of business/specialization. BIT3024------15 weeks Commencing date: 2nd March until 14th June 2015 Latest attachment date – 15th March 2015

PLACEMENT LOCATIONS Students are strongly advised to select an organisation which is relevant to respective programmes. Fully responsible for their own placements. Responsibility of the student to notify the Industrial Training Committee of the final company chosen. Trainee positions such as promoter, operator or other positions that do not relate to the student’s programme of study are NOT ALLOWED. Trainee positions in an organisation OWNED/MANAGED BY A CLOSE FAMILY MEMBER ARE NOT ALLOWED.

PLACEMENT LOCATIONS International students are ALLOWED to apply for a placement in an organization in their home country/other countries (subject to terms and conditions). Students must accept the FIRST placement offered to them and all placements must be on a FULL TIME basis. Upon acceptance of the training placement (i.e. contract has been signed by the student), it is deemed that the placement has been confirmed and finalised. As such, students are NOT ALLOWED TO CHANGE THEIR TRAINING PLACEMENT ORGANISATION.

PLACEMENT LOCATIONS Any change in the placement organisation after it has been confirmed and finalised will result in an ‘F’ grade being awarded to the student. Students are to be fully responsible for the terms and conditions imposed by the Company. The University is NOT LIABLE for any breach of contract between the Student and the Company.

PROCEDURES Before the training Students are NOT ALLOWED to register for the industrial training if they fail to attend all the briefing sessions. Call up the company to find out whether there is a vacancy for industrial trainees before sending out the application letters. If the company has vacancies, get the name of the person in charge so that students can address the letter to the person in charge correctly in the application letter. The person in charge may be from the HR department, training department, or any other department in the organization. Letter without complete information (either information about you yourself or the company) may result in not getting any reply from the company.

PROCEDURES Students are required to fill up the four (4) sets of documents (refer to the FOB website on BIT3034 and Appendix A) For the Pre-Placement Registration, students need to submit the following documents: Confirmation of Student Status Letter Cover Letter Application Form Company Confirmation Letter Academic Achievement/Results (the online version is sufficient)

PROCEDURES The Industrial Training Committee will NOT ENTERTAIN registration that is made with incomplete documents. Marks will be deducted if irregularities are found in the application stage and/or training period. All documents MUST BE SUBMITTED to be verified by the assigned Lecturers. It is the responsibility of the student to contact and follow up with the company of their choice 2 weeks after the submission of the application. Students are to do the same for the second company (if applicable).

PROCEDURES Not able to secure an industrial training placement by the stipulated deadline, the student must notify the Industrial Training Committee in writing within one week of the deadline so that the Faculty could assist the student with alternative arrangements. Students are to register for the industrial training subject (BIT3034 or BIT3024) during the course registration period. The faculty will not be responsible for any issues that may arise due to the failure of students to register for the industrial training subject.

GRADING: PASS or FAIL Retake Components Marks Student’s monthly reports Student’s Final Report Lecturer's Evaluation During Industrial Visit Employer's Evaluation Total 20% 40% 100% The student is given FAIL grade, if <10% of employer evaluation; <10% of lecturer’s evaluation; or <50% of total marks Retake A certificate of achievement will be awarded to students who obtain at least 80% of the total marks for this subject.

Marks to be deducted on the following issues: DEDUCTIONS OF MARKS Marks to be deducted on the following issues: when the student obtains more than one company’s offer and fail to inform the company whose offer he/she decides to reject; or not adhering to the planned schedule.

LEAVE OF ABSENCE If a student QUITS the program after its commencement, NOT ALLOWED to register for any subjects offered in Tri 3, 2014/2015; He/she has to apply for “Leave of Absence” for that trimester, subject to the Dean’s approval; Appeal will be looked into on case by case basis

Letter of Indemnity A promise of payment in case of any damage /loss MMU DOES NOT issue Letter of Indemnity to any company

APPLICATION FOR OVERSEA INTERNSHIP Students need to ensure that the company is genuine and valid. Call/ send the company an e-mail to enquire about internship opportunities. A corresponding e-mail between the applicant and the company is needed (preferably) before the application form is submitted to the faculty for authentication. Faculty will cross check the documents and company identity. Once verification is complete, the students may continue the application process, i.e. send out the formal letter.

Important !!! Ensure your own safety and health while having an international internship. Students are expected to report any suspicion to the Faculty immediately. No illegal activities is allowed at all. The Faculty and the University holds no responsibility over activities during oversea training. Working permit/ Visa arrangement is between the student and the employer. Neither MMU nor the faculty will not make further arrangement. Students are expected to know all of the do’s and don’ts of the host country and shall avoid any prohibitions/violations.
