Grading Criteria  90%-100% A  80%-89% B  70%-79% C  60%-69% D  Below 60% F

Make-up Work and Late Work Policy  You have to find out what you missed. You have as many days as you missed to make up the work. Come in during tutorial, check the board, or look online for lesson information.  Tests and quizzes can only be made up during tutorial. Tests and quizzes must be made up in 1 week.  Smaller assignments will receive half credit, and larger assignments will receive a 10% deduction for each day it is late.

Plagiarism  Plagiarism is using word-for-word or in substance someone else’s work or ideas without giving proper credit to the source of the information. Acts of plagiarism in any portion of an assignment will result in a grade of zero for that assignment.  Students will not be allowed to resubmit an assignment that has been plagiarized. No exceptions.  If a student provides another student with an opportunity to cheat, that student will also receive a zero.

Bathroom Passes  3 bathroom passes a semester  You are responsible for your bathroom passes from this point forward  Any bathroom passes left over at the end of the semester will be worth 5 points of extra credit.  Plan accordingly and use the bathroom before class.

Classroom Rules  Students are to act with respect towards the teacher and other classmates, including respecting the property of others.  Students must demonstrate maturity at all times (no slang, no foul language, no physical contact, raise hand before speaking, do not interrupt teacher or classmates)  Tardiness will not be tolerated. Tardiness will result in detention. Students must be in their seats BY THE BELL. (Your stuff being in your seat does not count!)  No food, drinks, or electronic devices (bottled water is allowed)  Students must come to class prepared will all their materials

Rewards  Increasing your knowledge  Praise from the teacher  Contacting parents about positive behavior  Watching movies that correspond with the novel being read

Consequences  Nonverbal warning  Verbal warning/detention  Student/teacher conference  Call to parents  Student removed from class

Remind 101  Follow the instructions to sign up for this service.  The instructions are on the last page of the syllabus.

Journal Assignment  Find a notebook, make a notebook, get a journal of some kind.  There will be extended journal prompts 1-2 days a week, plus bellwork  Journals will be collected every few weeks (but you won’t know when)  5-10 Points for each entry  Be creative  Display your name and class period clearly on the front of your journal.  Journal prompts will be posted on the website

What Books Did You Read Last Year?  Let’s brainstorm a list of the books you read last year and over the summer.  What are your favorite books?

Independent Reading  Lexile levels  Due every grading period  4 Choices, you may do each one once (the order in which you decide to do them in does not matter)  Approved Books

Emergency Situations  Turn your phones off immediately (this is very important).  Stay quiet, and wait for instructions.

Wear your Identification Cards  You must have your ID on, and clearly visible to everyone.  It is important that in an emergency situation, everyone knows who you are (in case you are out of the room and end up in another classroom, the teacher must be able to identify you)

Pens, Pencils, and Notebooks  You must have these items with you at the beginning of class.  If you do not have these items, I have some of them, and you can purchase them from me for.25 cents.

Add This to Your Syllabus  All assignments that require typing must be typed in Times New Roman, 12 point font, and must be double spaced.

Movies  Watching movies in this class is an incentive  Should your class be misbehaving, your class will lose their opportunity to watch the movie, and will have to write an essay, do vocabulary, or some other tedious and unenjoyable assignment.  Tally Mark System

Participation Points (Also Not in Syllabus)  You earn 3 points each day simply for showing up on time, with your materials, and ready to go.  You will lose a point for being late, not being prepared, taking your phone out, etc. You can lose a point for any type of misbehavior or for breaking the rules.  I will keep track of who loses points on a roster, and I am not going to tell you when you lose points. If your misbehavior continues, you can lose points from the next class period as well.

Dismissal  I dismiss you, the bell does not.
