INOTES Innovative Thermal Energy Storage Systems

Who are we?(1) Indian Coordinator Dr. Arvind Kumar Assistant Professor Liquid Metals Group Department of Mechanical Engineering Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur INDIA

Who are we?(2) European Coordinator Prof. Dr.-Ing. Axel Gottschalk Institute for Process Engineering Bremerhaven University of Applied Sciences GERMANY European Partner Prof. Dr. Cemil Alkan Department of Chemistry Gaziosmanpaşa University, Tokat TURKEY

The project is about…(1) Research, development and innovation on phase change materials (PCM) for thermal energy storage. Basic Idea:

The project is about…(2) Research, development and innovation on phase change materials (PCM) for thermal energy storage. Renewable heat as well as recovery of waste heat, e.g. from industrial sites, is the targeted heat source for advanced and innovative thermal energy storage (TES) systems. The objective of this project is to overcome the disadvantages of inorganic PCMs to use their excellent physical properties regarding heat storage. Standardization to allow future industrial use as commercially feasible technology.

The project is about…(3) Subproject 'Materials' Gaziosmanpaşa University, Tokat, Turkey: Phase change materials Thermal energy storage Polymer synthesis and characterization Microencapsulation Methodologies and tools: Statistical planning of experimental work

The project is about…(4) Subproject 'Modelling and Simulation' Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur, India: Solidification Heat transfer Computational fluid dynamics and transport phenomena (CFD) Methodologies and tools: Modelling and simulation of multi-component phase change behaviour

The project is about…(5) Subproject Application' Bremerhaven University of Applied Sciences, Germany: Process design, simulation and energy optimization Development of innovative technical processes and applications Methodologies and tools: Heuristic numeric approach for conceptual design Computer Aided Process Engineering (CAPE) Techno-economic evaluation (CAPEX, OPEX)

The project is about…(6) scientific understanding of thermal physics of heat storage identifcation of challenges for practical applications finding suitable solutions combined experimental and theoretical approach technically feasible and robust as well as sustainable applications in terms of environment and economics.

Connecting India and EU – Mobility Year #1:kick-off meeting in Germany (completed); visit of Indian and Germany partners to Turkey; public workshop in Turkey. Year #2: visit of German and Turkish partners to India; public workshop in India. Year #3: visit of Indian and Turkish partners to Germany; public workshop in Germany.

Sharing knowledge: Dissemination of results Project webpage Journal and conference co-publications Training and exchange of students involved in the project 3 annual public INOTES workshops (1 per country involved) Participation in suited conferences outside the project

What is the benefit? If heat is available e.g. solar heat and/or industrial waste heat, but no demand at the same time, that heat cannot be used. Efficient heat storage systems overcome that weakness, because heat supply/source and heat demand/sink become disconnected in time. Available heat will charge a storage while heat demand at a later point in time will be satisfied by the heat stored. → Reduced primary energy consumption and related GHG emissions

The cooperation started… … with a project idea from the German partner … with networking from Germany towards Turkey … with networking from Germany towards India … with selection of best suited partners … with compiling a joint project proposal … because of a successfull international evaluation

Why a joint EU-India project? Common needs to solve energy difficulties EU/India → joint effort Different cultural backgrounds of the partners → Improving soft-skills of researchers involved Different societal needs in EU and India → Identification of other/similar applications for heat storage systems

What are the key success factors for cooperation? Joint forces towards the common project goal Open minded partners Creative atmosphere Iterative and interactive approach Multidisciplinary team

My European colleague… … provides industrial experience from his business life prior to his academic career … has profund knowledge and experience from numerous international collaborative projects … knows the ingredients for successfull project proposals

My Indian colleague… … has been working in Europe … knows the European culture … likes scientific adventures … believes in added valued of multidisciplinary collaborations

Intercultural communication “Share the most memorable intercultural misunderstanding during the project“ None so far :-) Just some wondering about e.g.: Cows on the street, in the middle of the town ??? How to eat liquid-phase food without a spoon ???

On behalf of the INOTES project partners Thanks for your attention!
