1 120 April 2016SPIRE Projects´ Conference 2016 Turning waste from steel industry into valuable low cost feedstock for energy intensive industry SPIRE Projects´ Conference 2016 Recovery from waste Founded by the European Union’s H2020 Programme Javier Rodríguez CIC Energigune

2 220 April 2016SPIRE Projects´ Conference 2016 Founded by the European Union’s H2020 Programme RESLAG project Main aim  Decrease of the environmental impact of landfill of steel slag by turning waste slag from the steel industry into useful feedstock for other industrial sectors leading to close loop processes Objectives Environment: Reduction of landfilled steel slag (25% of the total, around 3 Mton) Heat recovery and CO 2 reduction Primary raw material reduction. Operative: Building and validation of 4 pilot system: 1.Non-ferrous high value metal extraction from slag 2.Shaped pebbles for TES applications to recover heat in thermal energy intensive industries 3.TES material to be used for CSP plants 4.Production of innovative refractory ceramic compounds. Social, sectorial and policy : To contribute to a close to zero waste Steel Sector To improve industry competitiveness in a wide number of sectors Provide to the EU with the main social, environmental, energetic and organizational outputs derived from RESLAG project. 4 Innovative alternatives to valorize an industrial waste by-product in new applications Objectives

5 520 April 2016SPIRE Projects´ Conference 2016 Founded by the European Union’s H2020 Programme RESLAG project Impact management of the expected results from RESLAG project Identification and quantification of the RESLAG project impact. LCA Up-scaling of the pilots. Lab-Pilot- industrial scale. Feasibility and performance assessment. Benchmarking Economic & environmental evaluation. Customization. Market & application identification. Main actor & interest mapping. Risk evaluation The interest on the exploitation of the results obtained from RESLAG is also manifested by different industries Solar developments System & Engineering development Foundry Cement production Steel & tubular products Iron/Steel industry Glass production Renewable energies Automotive

6 620 April 2016SPIRE Projects´ Conference 2016 Founded by the European Union’s H2020 Programme RESLAG project Common approach to the industrial waste product valorization (Steel slag). Material reuse, recycling, recovery and reduce the overall generation of waste along product chains in different production processes. Work towards a circular economy model. Optimum management of the waste products, working in the direction of a green economy. Reducing the fossil energy dependence going towards a better exploitation of the available energy sources: Industrial waste heat recovery technologies. Innovative CSP heat storage solutions. Recycling and better management of critical metallic materials. Reducing the raw material needs by the recovery of critical metals such as Cu, Cr, Ni and Zn. These materials are included in the EU critical elements roadmap. Reducing the environmental impact of different industrial sectors (steel industry, refractory production, etc. ) generating new technologies with improved efficiencies in the use of materials and energy. Avoiding CO 2 emissions from EU strategic industries (steelmaking sector, around 70 kg/produced steel ton). Generating innovative technologies in the industrial scale offering new alternatives for industrial processing and energy management. Renewable energy dispatchability (Thermo-solar). Industrial symbiosis: whereby different actors derive mutual benefit from sharing utilities and waste materials, requires large-scale systemic innovation with the aim of turning waste from one industry into useful feedstock for another one. Finally, the global benefit from this activities should be an with minimized ecological impact of current industry with a maximized exploitation of the available resources. Alignment with SPIRE vision:
