GREENFOODS - Towards Zero fossil CO 2 emission in the European food & beverage industry GREENFOODS Contract number:IEE/12/723.SI2.645697 Project duration:28 months (04/2013 – 07/2015) Last modified:20.10.2014

Project summary support the European food and beverage industry to achieve competitiveness gains triggered by higher energy efficiency and lower carbon emissions Ensure and foster the competitiveness, improving the security of energy supply and guaranteeing the sustainable production in Europe Reaching zero fossil CO 2 emission in the European food & beverage industry“

Background Challenges identified and to be solved  European food and drink industry with low energy efficiency, high energy costs and dependence on fossil energy sources  Missing awareness and knowledge of potentials for Efficient process technologies Heat integration Integration of renewable energy sources  Inefficient or missing funding and financing schemes  Missing guidelines how to realise identified optimisation potentials  Missing contact and information points  Missing knowledge exchange on identified solutions Need for a branch concept including tailor-made solutions

Objectives Development of the GREENFOODS branch concept  Guideline for the user to identify tailor-made solutions for “green production” for SMEs in the food and beverage industry GREENFOODS training module  Impart essential knowledge about smart and green technologies in the food and beverage sector by introducing participants into the use of the GREENFOODS branch concept Special funding schemes  Facilitate the implementation of identified energy efficiency potentials and renewable energy sources in SMEs Virtual Energy Competence Centres  Contact points within a European network Performance of energy audits as basis for the branch concept

Main steps Development and usage of the GREENFOODS branch concept based on the performance of energy audits Development of country- and sector-specific funding and financing schemes Performance of 200 pre-energy audits and 20 detail energy audits as basis for 5 best practice cases GREENFOODS training within the European Energy Manager (EUREM) Dissemination of results and conclusions

Expected impacts GREENFOODS branch concept  will be applied in companies during the project and will provide comprehensive solutions on energy saving and integration of RES.  supported and disseminated by at least 20 representatives of associations/multipliers (in 6 European countries) of the drink and food industry. Best practice examples and tailor-made solutions for different sub-sectors of the food and beverage industry GREENFOODS training module  60 trainers and 150 trainees trained with excellent knowledge on energy saving methodologies and RES for producing companies in the food and drink industry at the end of the training course Virtual Energy Competence Centres
