DEFINITE ARTICLE THE: I bought a blouse and a skirt. The blouse was cheap, but the skirt was rather expensive. 1) In which sentence are “blouse” and “skirt” introduced for the first time, so they are unfamiliar to the listener? 2) In which sentence “blouse” and “skirt” definite and clear to the listener?

There is a man in the garden. The man is carrying a gun in his hand. We use _____ when we mention something or someone for the first time. On the other hand, we use _____ if we mention the same thing or person for the second time. a/an the

The French are interested in art. / Americans are interested in pop culture. BUT If you talk about the language of a country you CAN’T USE THE. And the VERB IS SINGULAR. English is a worldwide language.

With superlatives: It was the longest flight I had ever taken. With parts of the day: I will be with my pupils in the afternoon/ in the evening/ in the morning. With ordinal numbers: He lives on the fifth floor. He became the second in the race.

With words which describe positions and place. The south of Ireland is gloomy. It is in the east/ west / south/ north. The Middle East has mystic features. BUT Eastern/ Western/ Northern/ Southern Turkey is rainy today. (The east/ the west/ the north/ the south of Turkey is rainy today.
