Question  Will a round or an oblong balloon travel the farthest?

Hypothesis WWWWe think the oblong balloon will go farther.

Materials Needed Materials Needed 7-10 round balloons 7-10 oblong balloons String A straw ScissorsPencilsPaper Tape Tape Measure ChairsPenPumpCalculator

Procedure 1.Put the straw on the string and tie the string to one chair. 2.Tie the other end of the string to the other chair. 3. Pump oblong balloon five times. 4. Pinch the end and tape to straw.

Procedure Procedure 5. Mark a start point with a pen. 6. Release balloon from the start point. 7. Measure distance balloon travelled. 8. Record measurement. 9. Repeat steps 3-8 four times. 10. Repeat steps 3-8 five times for round balloons. 11. Put information into table and graph.

Variables Variables Independent: Type of balloon Controlled: supplies, location, and starting point Dependent: distance balloon travelled

Results Results  Our results showed distances and average distances the round and oblong balloons travelled. The recordings show trial distances of the round balloon to be 173in., 168in., 175in., 165in., and 190in.The oblong balloons travelled156in., 223in., 211in., 203in., and 228in.The data shows the average distance travelled by the round balloon was 174in. And the oblong balloons is 204in. The oblong balloons travelled 30 inches farther than the round balloon on average.

Conclusion In conclusion our hypothesis was correct because the average distance for the oblong balloon was 30 inches more than the round balloon. We believe that in the real world some things are more aerodynamic than others. Birds and alligators travel farther faster because of their shape. Birds have less wind resistances. Alligators have less water resistance. Oblong balloons have less resistance than the round ones which make them travel farther. We think more trials would give the same results, but we should try to be sure.
