Speed

Question What surface will a car roll on the fastest?

Research A large force causes a larger acceleration. A large force causes a larger acceleration. It takes force to make motion. It takes force to make motion. When you stop, you change your motion. When you stop, you change your motion. Speed is a measure of an object’s change in position over time. Speed is a measure of an object’s change in position over time.

Hypothesis If the surface is changed, the car is going to go faster on tile.

Materials A remote control car A remote control car Carpet Carpet Tile Tile Meter tape Meter tape Stop watch Stop watch Timer Timer Masking tape Masking tape

Procedure 1. Use tape to mark a start and finish line 2 meters apart on tile. 2. Put the car on the tile and measure the speed from the starting line to the finish line. 3. Repeat Steps 1 and 2, but the surface should be on carpet. 4. Repeat Steps 2-3 for two more trials.

Control Variable Location Remote control car BatteryCarpetTile

Independent Variable Surface

Dependent Variable Speed

Results Time in Seconds Surface Trial 1 Trial 2 Trial 3 Mean Tile 5313 Carpet 2111.33

Results Carpet Versus Tile

Conclusion The hypothesis was not supported. The car went faster on carpet. The car should have gone faster on tile because there is more friction on the carpet which slows cars down. The tile’s smoother track made the car go so fast that the tires went out of control. The car did not go straight so the track’s distance increased, causing the car to take longer on the track. The carpet’s grooves kept the car under control, so the car traveled in a straight line and had better traction. This resulted with a faster speed. The hypothesis was not supported.
