Introduction to Library Resources within SVHG September 2009

Library Really Basics… SMH Library: Ground Floor, Annexe 1 qualified librarian 0 admin staff 9am to 5pm (closed ) SVUH Library: First Floor, ERC 2 qualified librarians 1 part-time admin staff 9.30am to 5.30pm 3 late openings Oct- June til 9pm (Tues, Wed, Thurs)

Library Basics There are Libraries on two sites – SMH & SVUH Both available to staff/students in SVHG Each has its own print collection, searchable via one combined catalogue. Items can be loaned from either site by registered members Electronic collection is combined

SVUH Library SVUH Library is networked to UCD so access to UCD electronic resources are available in the Library via the site: – For anyone with a laptop, there is also a WiFi connection to UCD

Who are our members All SVHG staff and All students on placement in SVHG

Physical Resources – SMH Books = 1755, many titles held on both sites Print Journals = 74 A/V Material = 81 Members = 474 Study spaces = 30 approx PCs on SVHG network = 7 Photocopier, printer, fax machine, binding machine

Physical Resources – SVUH Books = 3000, many titles held on both sites Print Journals = 140 currently received A/V Material = 206 Members = 2200 Study spaces = 50 PCs on UCD network = 16 PCs on SVHG network = 1 Standalone PC = 1 Photocopier/printer, colour printer, scanner

E-resources – including….. 1,000 (approx) e-journals 10 Databases: –BMJ Clinical Evidence –UpToDate –British National Formulary –British Nursing Index –CINAHL Plus with Full Text –Cochrane Library –MD Consult –PsycINFO –PubMed (with SVHG fulltext) –Trip Database

A-to-Z One-stop-shop for access to all our: Electronic journals Databases Electronic books You need to remember only ONE website

Accessing SVHG e-resources in the Hospital Click on Login button (no username/password required) 3.Access is via the Hospital’s IP range.

Accessing SVHG e-resources everywhere else Requires SVHG Athens account (only available to staff - temporary or permanent) Click on Athens login and enter your own username and password.

What is Athens? An electronic access management system – provides a “back door” to subscribed resources from a remote location Allows librarian to control who uses their resources Protects publishers from unauthorised use of their products Only provides access to the content your library has subscribed to Not every publisher has signed up to it (e.g. UpToDate)

Using A-to-Z E-Journals Search by typing in full name or Browse alphabetically Link to full text by clicking on blue link Note embargoes Note any additional log-ins (enable pop- ups) Note multiple links

Using A-to-Z Databases Scroll down through list Click on link Note any additional log-ins, will NOT pop up automatically Note link to PubMed, which will filter your search to full text held in SVHG (only works when in SVHG – within SVHG IP range)

Online Catalogue - Heritage

Registering for Online Catalogue Have you borrowed a book from us in the last 5 years? Contact us and we’ll you your Reader Code and PIN Never borrowed? Complete Borrower Registration Form We will you with Reader Code and PIN If you lose PIN, we’ll generate a new one
