1 Welcome to the Library Postgraduate induction 2010

2 About the Library The John Rylands University Library service (JRUL) consists of the Main Library and several site libraries Access online via University portal Details of opening hours and locations on our website: www.manchester.ac.uk/library/

3 Main Library Several floors with books, journals, computers and photocopiers located on each All floors accessible by stairs and lifts (floors are colour-coded) Most arts and humanities books held on Blue 3 / Sciences and social sciences on Blue 2. Termtime opening hours: 8 am till 11.30 pm (Mon – Fri) 9 am till 9.30 pm (Sat) / 12 noon till 11.30 pm (Sun)

4 Your University ID Card You’ll need your ID Card to: access all JRUL libraries – no card, no access! borrow books use the Library photocopiers

5 Borrowing books Books can be borrowed via Self Issue machines Most books can be borrowed for four weeks Researchers can borrow up to 40 books at a time Taught course postgraduates can borrow up to 25 Book return is self-service too There is also help and advice available at Enquiry desks Document Supply Unit is useful

6 High Demand Collection Contains heavily used books, DVDs and journal articles Most items can be borrowed for 1 night, 2 nights or on 3 hour loan Some items are reference-only and cannot be taken out of the Library Situated on Ground Floor of Main Library

7 Returning and renewing items We will email you to remind you when items are due back Return books promptly - fines are charged for overdue items! You can renew books if they are not needed by another borrower Renew by phone or via My Account on the Library Catalogue

8 My Account View your borrower record on the Library Catalogue through the My Account option You need your Personal Identity Number (PIN) to access it Renew and reserve items and book group study rooms online

9 Library material: Books Use the Library Catalogue to search for books by author, title or keyword. The Catalogue also tells you: the location of the book (the site and shelfmark) the loan period the number of copies available

10 Library material: Journals Search for printed and electronic journal titles using the Library Catalogue Printed journals are shelved in alphabetical order by journal title and are reference-only Most journal titles held at the Library are now available electronically

11 Special Collections The John Rylands Library on Deansgate houses the Library’s Special Collections Archives and manuscripts held here Contact the archivists via the Library website Reading rooms available for use by students Email or phone to arrange bookings

12 Photocopying Photocopiers located around the Library Your ID Card acts as your photocopying card A4 copies are 6p each; A3 copies are 10p Photocopying Services offer colour photocopying and copying onto OHP transparencies

13 www.manchester.ac.uk/library From here you can access: the Library Catalogue full-text electronic journals databases and subject information reference works such as dictionaries and encyclopaediae our cross-search service, past exam papers information on all Library services

14 Computer facilities You need your IT username and password to use the computers on campus Around 280 PCs in the Main Library Wireless access for laptops Computers at other library sites and elsewhere on campus

15 Off-campus access to e- resources Your Central IT username and password gives you access to almost all electronic resources, wherever you are Further details on our website – www.manchester.ac.uk/library/eresources/

16 Group Study Rooms 14 group working rooms available in Main Library Can be used by groups of 2-8 people 32” LCD monitor, laptop connection and DVD/ video facilities in each room Rooms can be booked via the Student Portal

17 The Library Lounge Café area in the Main Library open until 9.30pm each day during term time Lounge open until 15 minutes before Library closes Wireless access and comfortable seating areas to take a break from studying

18 Catalogues and databases The Library catalogue allows you to search for books and journals held in the Library Databases allow you to search for articles on a topic Some databases are merely bibliographies. Others give direct access to full text. Many do both. The SearchIt button allows you to look through the Library holdings

20 How you can help us The Library is for quiet study. Study rooms are available for group discussions Please switch mobile phones to silent mode Calls can be made in the designated ‘Phonezones’ Food and drink should only be consumed in designated areas Let us know what you think!
