Opening Prayer Purpose for the training Discussion about the VMC Orientation Communion for the sick requirements VMC (ISO, NPO, Swallow Alert, Mental) Catholic Church Only Catholics in “good standing” Example of a visitation Example of procedure Pick up the list of Catholics from the Chaplin Plan your visiting schedule Stop at the nurses station and ask “can these individuals receive communion? Knock on the door and go in and introduce where your from and the purpose of the visit If yes (to communion) then a opening prayer, Our Father, communion, concluding prayer, then open dialogue (use the “blue book”-communion for the sick) If no (to communion) then open dialogue and maybe a prayer for the sick Any patient request for a Priest or …… contact Deacon Marshal Open for questions Rotation Schedule Closing Prayer

St. Stephen (Procedure) E.M. picks up Host (20) from the St. Stephen, pick up the key in the Sacristy, Purple key chain then goes to the chapel opening the tabernacle getting hosts from the silver ciborium (one for VMC). If the Sacristy is locked contact Betty at the reception office. E.M. signs in at the front desk and (have your VMC badge) E.M. picks up list from Chaplin’s office (First floor) Folder in the Slot on the wall, return it to the “In basket” E.M. goes (use hall monitors for location) to the Patients room ( cleans their hands before entering ), knocks and then enters, introducing themselves then ask if they would like communion. If/so then they use the procedure from the “Blue Book”. (Pay attention to the signs NPO, Isolation, swallow alert etc. either on the door or hall monitor E.M. to bring back the remainder of the host to the church.

St. Stephen (Procedure) Things to remember: If unsure about whether or not a patient can receive Communion ask the Nurse at the station Pay attention to the signs of the patients door-NPO, ISOLATION etc. Be aware of the patients privacy We are their for the patient, so show respect Contact St. Stephen if a patient is from the parish We must all take the Archdiocese Safe Environment Training

If patient say’s that haven’t been to church in months-then they should see a Priest, however, you could bless them Family members or others want Communion-then make sure they are Catholic and have been practicing If the patient or a family member wants to save the Host for later or for someone else-this is unacceptable because of the treatment of the Host. (It could be lost or forgotten) If the patient may die within the next hour or two and the family wants you to give them Communion or pray for them or give them last rights-you are to call Father Ed, if he can not respond or send someone then you act by praying for the sick. If the patient doesn’t recognize what Communion is-then say they should see a Priest before receiving Communion If the patient is not coherent or alert then they should not receive Communion If the patient is unsure of whether or not they are in “good standing”, then they should see a Priest before receiving Communion. If patients from another faith would like to have you pray with them, then yes, however if they would like communion you’ll leave a message for the Hospital Chaplin to call their Minister.

Concerns NPO Leaving a card Knocking before entering Calling the Chaplin or ing if you can’t make it Call to see if the Chaplin is in Leave the list in the folder after completion Filling out the printed list of names Including Visit, Received Communion, Comments
