Literature Circle Cumulative Presentation Names

Positive Connotation SMILE: Smile has a positive connotation because in the story the characters are celebrating a birthday and the birthday girl is smiling, which indicates that she is happy and having a good time. The overall effect of the word smile in the story is that the author is letting the readers know that the main character is enjoying herself and that the story is at a pleasant part

Negative Connotation TEAR: Tear has a negative connotation because in the story the characters are mourning the death of their older sister and crying about missing her. The tear indicates that someone is sad, which brings the mood of the story down to a level of sadness

Denotation SMILE: Form one's features into a pleased, kind, or amused expression, typically with the corners of the mouth turned up: "smiling faces". TEAR: A drop of clear salty liquid secreted from glands in a person's eye when they cry or when the eye is irritated.

Plot: Introduction In the introduction, the author introduces Georgina as a middle school student aged girl who is living in the family car after her dad left, and they lost their home. She has a mother and a younger brother. She feels embarrassed to be seen in the car by her best friend Luanne.

Simile #1: One example of a simile from our novel is “she looked like she had washed her hair in a deep fryer.” This simile is comparing Georgina’s hair to something that is very greasy. They chose this comparison to emphasize how dirty and unclean she is becoming. #2:

Metaphor #1: One example of a metaphor from our novel is the smoke was a tunnel of sorrow. This is comparing the smoke to be a representation of the sadness the owners felt from their home burning down. #

Personification #1: The car limped home. This is an example of personification because a car can’t limp, as a human does. The author meant that the car was very fragile and barely made it home because of a needed repair. #

Setting The setting is in a neighborhood with fences and larger homes. Some have fences around their yards. There is also a sidewalk on the edge of those yards. The story is taking place in the past, in a foreign country. It is winter time because the characters are bundling up and sledding on snow.

Tone Depressed Feelings of Failure Sorrow Unwanted

Mood

Character PROTAGONIST: The Protagonist is Georgina. Georgina is a middle school age girl who has stringy brown hair. She is thin and is very intelligent. She is independent and has motivation to be successful. “Georgina took it upon herself to plan how to move out of their car, and into something that doesn’t contain wheels.” ANTAGONIST:

Situational Irony Georgina is able to steal the dog, but finds out she is allergic to pets.

Point of View The story is being told from 3 rd Person Limited. We know all of Georgina’s thoughts and feelings, but nobody else’s.

Analogy An example of an analogy from our novel is Georgina : Car :: LuAnne : Pink Bedroom

Imagery SMELL: An example of imagery is “the eggs smelled of salt and runny yolks” for the sense of smell. Gerogina indicates that she smells the eggs cooking from the back of the house and included what the smell smelled like. TASTE: TOUCH: SIGHT: SOUND:

Rising Action The rising action………………..

Climax The climax in the story takes place when………………..

Falling Action In the falling action, the characters……………

Resolution In the resolution, …………………..

Theme The theme of our novel, that supports Bravery and Courage, is that being brave doesn’t mean you have to be brave in your actions, but you must also be brave in your words and thoughts. This is supported in our novel when Georgina decides to tell the truth about stealing the dog. She was being brave and risking getting in a lot of trouble.

Generalization Theme Statement Phrase Example:“Annemarie stepped out into the forest with her hands shaking and already becoming sweaty. She must make it through the woods to save everyone.” Sentence Example: Phrase Example:

Summary In How To Steal a Dog, a girl named Georgina decides the best way to help her mother get money is to steal a dog and get a large reward for returning it to the owner. ……
