PRHS Scheduling Class of 2018

A Day in the life…  We have eleven periods in our school day… which actually works out to be 8 academic periods plus lunch.  Classes start at 7:20 and end at 2:26.  Each academic period is approximately 42 minutes long.  Yes! You have enough time between classes to get to your next class.  Each student has their own locker with a combination lock (they are changed each year)  You are permitted to carry one bag/backpack with you to class.

A day continued…  Each student will have a lunch account, with a pin number, to be used to purchase breakfast and/or lunch  Each student will have their own personal logins for technology purposes. (Home Access, Blackboard, etc..)  The key to success at the High School is: GET INVOLVED!!!

The Class of 2018’s daily schedule will consist of:  English  Social Studies  Math  Science  Wellness (Health/PE)  World Language OR Reading  Lunch  Elective (student choice)  Elective OR Study Hall (student choice)

English: CP or HP English 9  CP English 9 (College Prep) Students will read various genres of literature Writing emphasis will include narrative, literary analysis, timed writings and a research paper. Also review of grammar, basic usage, and sentence structure.  Summer Reading required.  HP English 9 (Honors/PreAP) Prerequisite: Completion of English 8 with a 90% or higher.  Students will read various genres of literature. Writing emphasis will include literary analysis, criticism, reflection/response, descriptive paragraphs, essays and a research paper.  Summer Reading Required.

Social Studies: CP or HP US Cultures 1  CP US Cultures 1: The study of the political, social, economic and intellectual development and growth of the US and Commonwealth of Pennsylvania from  HP US Cultures 1 Class time includes reading primary documents, formulating historical questions, proposing critical arguments, discussing controversial issues, researching original inquiries, and writing scholarly papers.

Science: Placement determined by previous course and math alignment  HP Earth & the Environment  Earth & the Environment  Academic Biology*  Hn. Biology*  In order to take an honors level course, students must have a 90% average in their current regular education course or an 80% in an honors level course.  *Students wishing to take Academic or Honors Biology must be concurrently enrolled in Geometry/Hn Geometry or higher.

Mathematics: Placement determined by previous course  Algebra 1  Hn. Geometry  Geometry  Hn. Algebra 2  Algebra 2  Applied Algebra/Trig.  Hn. Trigonometry  In order to take an honors level course, students must have a 90% average in their current regular education course or an 80% in an honors level course.

Health/PE (1 credit) All students are required to complete.5 credits in PE and.5 credits in Health during the ninth grade year. Yes, we have a pool and yes, you will swim

World Language: 2-3 years at the high school level recommended  Spanish 1, 2  German 1,2  French 1,2  Mandarin Chinese  While PR doesn’t require students to take a World Language to graduate, it is recommended that you take 2-3 years at the high school level for college admission purposes.

Graduation Requirements Class of  4 credits of English  3 credits of Social Studies (2 US History and 1 World History)  3 credits Mathematics  3 credits Science  1 credit Health/PE (9 th grade)  1 academic elective credit in Math, Science or Social Studies.  9 elective credits  Recommend 2-3 consecutive years of a language at the high school level for college purposes  2 must be taken in Art/Music, Computer/Business, Technology Ed or Consumer Science

Elective Departments PRHS offers elective options across the departments:  Art  Air Force JROTC  Business  Community Service: Peer Buddies  Computer Science  Family & Consumer Science  Music  Technology Education

Class of 2018 Scheduling Process  Current teachers will be placing students in academic courses, based on current performance and course pre-requisites (see Program of Studies)  These placements will come home to be reviewed/approved the week of 2/17.  Parent/guardian may change course levels/courses by following the directions that will accompany the form, and can be found online.  Your MS Counselors will be meeting with students, by team, to discuss elective choices between now and the end of the month. IF you will be new to PR, your PRHS counselor will meet with you to choose academics and electives the evening of 2/26.

If you will be new to PR next year: A scheduling session will be held with the High School counselors on February 26, :45 pm – 8:00 pm HS Global Studies LGI ***Please be sure to complete the PR Enrollment Process prior to the scheduling date***

Between NOW and THEN :  It is important to plan your elective courses prior to your assigned scheduling day.  Be sure to also plan Alternate Choices for each elective (other than Band, Chorus and Orchestra)  Review course descriptions, pre-requisites and course requirements in the PRHS Program of Studies, available on the High School website.  Talk over your choices with your parents.  Come to scheduling prepared with any questions you may have for your counselors.

Naviance  Communication tool used by the HS Guidance Office during your four years of high school.  In ninth grade, you will complete the Learning Style Inventory with your counselor.  Research colleges, careers, summer enrichment programs, scholarships and special events held at the high school and in the local community.  All students will be registered once the school year starts.
