6 Class of 2018 Graduation Requirements

7 Requirements Please see course catalogue for specifics 1. Satisfy graduation credits and classes 2. Meet technology proficiency 3. Complete Culminating Project

8 How will I earn HS credits? t A transcript is the official record of your high school classes & credits t 1 year = 2 semesters (18 weeks each) t A semester course = 0.5 credit t A year-long course = 1.0 credit

9 High School Credits t By passing all of your classes each semester, you earn 6.0 credits every year of High School t 6.0 credits/year x 4 years = 24.0 credits t Total number of credits needed for graduation = 22.0 credits

10 Required Credits Language Arts 4.0 Social Studies 3.0 Mathematics 3.0 (*Algebra II is grad requirement– may go beyond it) Science 2.0 Health 0.5 Physical Education 1.5 Fine/Applied Arts 1.0 Career & Technical Education 1.0 Electives/Additional Core 6.0 TOTAL 22.0 – Northwest Studies (taken in grade 7-12)

11 Technology Proficiency t Two ways to complete this requirement: t Pass the Technology Proficiency Test (will not earn.5 CTE credit) OR t Take one of the following classes(earn.5 CTE credit): t Intro to Computer Science t Website Design t IB Computer Science

13 What do I take in 9th Grade? 1. Literature and Composition 1 2. World History 1/Civics 3. Math 4. Science 5. Elective - PE, Health 6. Elective (1 year-long class* or 2 semester- long classes) *Most common are World Language, Music, PE

14 Humanities Option #1 – Block Literature and Composition 1 and World History 1/Civics t 1 classroom t 2 consecutive periods (i.e. 1 st & 2 nd periods) t 2 teachers

15 Humanities Option #2 – HONORS BLOCK t 1 classroom, 2 consecutive periods t 2 teachers t A successful honors student should be intellectually curious, enjoy reading & read on a regular basis, possess strong study habits and be able to write a five paragraph essay

16 Humanities Option #3 – Split Block Literature and Composition 1 and World History 1/Civics t 2 separate classrooms t 2 separate periods – may or may not be back to back t Same students in both classes

17 Math The math sequence (non-IEP) is: t Integrated Algebra A and B (7 th & 8 th grade math) t CC Algebra I t CC Geometry t CC Algebra II t Advanced Algebra, Pre-calculus, IB Mathematics I, Statistics, or Financial Algebra t Algebra 1 Lab & Geometry Lab – support classes for students who struggle with math; must be taken concurrently with Algebra 1 or Geometry.

18 Science t Biology (Year-long class)  Biology is recommended in 9th or 10th grade t Chemistry Laboratory Methods (Semester class) t Physics Laboratory Methods (Semester class)

19 Physical Education (PE) t 1.5 credits = 3 semesters t 1.0 MUST be done through classes t The remaining.5 credits can be done outside of school: t School Sports (.25 waived for each school sports season, 2 season maximum) t Outside credit

21 Course Options (continued) t Career & Technical Education (CTE) t Graphic Design 1 & 2, Police Forensics 1 & 2, TV Productions, Child Development t Health t Intro to Computer Science t Website Design t Fine Art

22 Equivalency Courses There are some courses that satisfy more than one graduation requirement. (example: Health course satisfies both Health & 0.5 CTE requirement) These equivalent courses do not reduce the number of credits required for graduation, but may change the courses needed to fulfill graduation requirements.

23 Outside Credit Options Students are able to take up to 4.0 credits outside of Skyline, but only 2.0 per school year (such as online courses, private accredited institutions, etc.) 50% of any graduation requirement must be met through Issaquah School District courses Students must receive written pre-approval to earn outside credit

24 Course Selection Things to keep in mind when selecting course requests:  Balance - consider academic load & outside involvements; sports, clubs, home, etc.  Learning Recommendations for sequential courses  Graduation requirements  College requirements  Typically 2-3 years of World Language  Math based Science (such as yearlong Physics or yearlong Chemistry)
