Women’s Rights Movement Feminism = political, social, economic equality of men and women 1966 – Betty Friedan & NOW (National Organization of Women) Goals were fair pay, equal jobs, stop advertising issues, and home life inequality

Women’s Rights Successes 1970s the movement gained ground with marches and politics 1972 – Gloria Steinem & Ms. Magazine Published to contrast other magazines directed at women Shift in laws and attitudes Higher education, military, political parties all included more women Roe v. Wade (1973) – legalized abortion

Women’s Rights Opposition Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) (1972) – equality will not be denied based on sex Growing conservatism in 1980s caused the amendment to not gain enough votes to be ratified, so it died Opposition: some men and women, African American women, employers
