2 National Organization of Women N.O.W – Movement for women’s liberation – Betty Friedan helped to found the NOW Major goals were to help women – Get good jobs – Equal pay for their work “Equal pay for equal work” Eleanor Roosevelt – Supporter of expanding women’s rights

3 Equal Rights Amendment E.R.A. – 1972 Congress passed the Equal Rights Amendment and sent it to the states for ratification Despite a majority support by Americans the bill failed to be ratified by the states and in 1982 died. – Phyllis Schlafly opposed ERA because she felt it would destroy families and the problems faced by women were not the government’s business

4 Mexican Americans Cesar Chavez Cesar Chavez – Mexican-American farm worker and civil rights activist Co-founded the National Farm Workers Association Mexican Americans formed “La Raza Unida” (United people) – Fought for better jobs, pay, education and housing

5 American Indian Movement AIM – 1968, a group of Native Americans founded the American Indian Movement An aggressive organization in demanding – Rights for people on reservations – Greater recognition of tribal laws – Early 1970s, Natives protested to force the government to provide them with more federal aid 1975; tribal governments gain more control over social programs, law enforcement and education
