2 New Women’s Movement Arises
Feminism- the belief that women should have economic, political, and social equality with men Jobs available to women- clerical, domestic, retail, social work, teaching, nursing President Kennedy appoints Commission on Status of Women- made less money and seldom promoted

3 Women and Activism Women become involved in civil rights and anti-war movements but not often in positions of leadership Inspired women to act and opened their eyes to unequal treatment Betty Freidan writes The Feminine Mystique and asks the question : “ is this all? ”

4 Gains and Losses Civil Rights Act of 1964
Prohibited discrimination based on gender Equal Employment Opportunity Commission- (EEOC) 1966 Freidan creates National Organization for Women (NOW) Child care facilities Enforce Civil Rights Act Issue guidelines to employers

5 Diverse Movement Gloria Steinem- founded National Women’s Political Caucus Ms. Magazine 1972 Congress passes Higher Education Act 1973 Roe v. Wade – women have the right to choose an abortion during the first 3 months of pregnancy

ERA- passed by Congress in 1972 but not enough states ratify Phyllis Schlafly- STOP-ERA Campaign Military draft Laws protecting women Same-sex marriages

Combat the ERA and pro-abortion supporters Social, cultural, and moral issues

9 Legacy Even though ERA did not pass;
Changed women’s attitudes towards career and family Expanding career opportunities
