Would have guaranteed gender equality under the law. Passed in congress, but didn’t pass because not enough states ratified it.

7 Gloria Steinem Co-founded Ms. Magazine, a feminist magazine.
Its title was meant to protest the social custom identifying women by marital status (Mrs. v Miss)

8 Phyllis schlafly Conservative political activist who denounced women’s liberation as “a total assault on family, marriage, and children.” Worked to defeat the ERA.

9 Roe v wade Supreme Court decision that assured women the right to legal abortions.

Fought for rights for migrant farm workers

11 Migrant Workers Laborers who moved from farm to farm

12 United Farm Workers (UFW)
Farm workers’ union organized by Cesar Chavez in 1962. Implemented a workers’ strike and consumer boycott of grapes.

13 Chicano movement Mexican American social and political movement
Dedicated to increasing Latinos’ awareness of their history and culture. Also worked on quality of life issues such as reducing poverty and discrimination as well as providing other opportunities for Latinos.

14 American Indian movement (aim)
An activist group focused on expanding civil rights for Native Americans. Securing of land, legal rights and self-government

15 counterculture Group that adopts values that run “counter” to the mainstream. Challenged the values of mainstream American society Valued youth, spontaneity, and freedom of expression. Sometimes called “hippies “ they promoted love, peace, and freedom Experimented with new styles of clothing and music, drugs, and free attitudes towards sex.

16 Earth day A response to growing environmental concerns, this was a nationwide protest calling for greater environmental protections.

17 Environmental protection agency (epa)
Federal agency devoted to protecting the “entire ecological chain.” Cleaned up and protected the environment as well as limited and eliminating pollutants that posed a risk to public health.
